Show Beautification Contest Planned For High School Students of Utah Awakened interest in Utah's background back-ground from effects of long-range planning for the 1947 Utah Centennial, Cen-tennial, coupled with interest in recent publications treating of Utah's past, has prompted planning plan-ning of a state-wide essay contest con-test for high school students, it was announced recently by the Utah State Department of Public Instruction, which is co-sponsoring the contest in connection with the Utah State Institute of Fine Arts. Purpose of the contest will be to arouse interest in Utah's background, and to solicit ideas from the young people of the state as to how pioneer ideals can be used to serve the present generation. Subject of the contest is, "How Can My Community Make Vital For Today Its Pioneer Heritage?" No wordage limitations or suggestions sug-gestions have been established; students are advised to use their own judgment in planning and executing ex-ecuting their essays. For the purpose pur-pose of the contest, the state has boon divided in to twelve regions, reg-ions, thereby offering each high school in the state a chance to compi'li' with sister schools in its own district. No single statewide state-wide winner will be declared, since there will be a winner chosen chos-en from each district. Each win-ner win-ner will receive as a prize a copy of "Utah: A Guide To the State", a recently-released volume, compiled com-piled through five years of constant con-stant effort by the Utah Writers' Project, WPA. The twelve prize copies of this splendid 595-page volume on all aspects of our state are available through the generosity gener-osity of Walter Frese, President of Hastings House, publishers of the book. Entries will be submitted to the principals of the various schools, who will in turn send them directly to Dr. Burton K. Farnsworth, 221 State Capitol, Salt Lake City. The contest closes March 1, 1942, at which time all entries must be in Dr. Farnsworth's hands. Judges of the contest will be representatives from the Department of Public Instruction, the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and the Utah Writers' Project. Manuscripts will be evaluated eval-uated on originality ideas and literary lit-erary worth. Announcement of winners will be made as soon after March 1st as possible. |
