Richard Cannon recently from two years service in Europe, was a family picnic outing out-ing Saturday, Aug. 18, at Oak Grove. Mr. and Mrs. George Q. Cannon, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Empey, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Daniels Dan-iels and families of St. George joined Cpl. and Mrs. Cannon and their small son at the grove for the day's program and visiting. Also with them were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Caldwell and family of Leeds, their son, Sgt. Kay Caldwell having hav-ing also returned recently from Europe. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon learned recently that their son, Ashley Cannon, who is with the destroyer service in the Pacific, has been advanced to the rating of Radar-man Radar-man second class. Their other son, Lt. George Cannon, who has been stationed for an extended period with the Marines in the vicinity of Guam, wrote them of the excitement ex-citement experienced when they knew the first atomic bomb had been loosed. P3 Pa PS Promoted Sheldon B. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Johnson of St. George was recently advanced to the rating of corporal at his base in Manila, according to a report just received. Cpl. Johnson graduated from the lower division of Dixie junior college in 1944, entering the service ser-vice in August of that year at Fort Douglas. He had his basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas, going overseas in January, 1945. c i now message center cieric, Military Police Command. - pa pa a Reports for Further Dtrty Capt. C. R. (Rus) Hansen, son )f Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Han-I Han-I .-sen of St. George is now at the Santa Ana redistribution center .awaiting his next assignment. Pilot of both P-38 and P-47 planes of the Ninth Air force he has 92 missions over Europe to his credit, having returned home only a few weeks ago. He coalcT, in all probability, get his release, but has signified his willingness to continue if his services are needed. la ft Ground Maintenance Clerk Member of the permanent cadre tf the personnel center at Fort Douglas is Pfc. Kenneth F. Coot, son of Mrs. Alta C. Cook of St George. He is ground maintenance mainten-ance clerk at this separation center cen-ter and his duties include tie supervision of the men who keep up the grounds and buildings at this post, where soldiers frotrr widely scattered world war fronts are passing through for discharge. Before entering military service in October, 1942, Pfc. Cook was engaged in radio repair work in St. George, haying had previous schooling and practice in this work. His three years of military service have included the repair and maintenance of radios and radio equipment for the U. S. Army Air forces at various fields in the U.S. a ft n Four Brothers in Service Even though peace has been declared, de-clared, Irvin McArthur Slc, son of Mr. and Mrs. Moroni McArthur of St. George, thinks he may still go overseas for duty. Attending the mine school at Hawthorne, Nevada, he was able to spend the week end with his parents in St. George. He has three brothers in uniform. uni-form. Pfc. Thomas McArthur, who has been overseas for an extended ex-tended period is now located at Udine, Italy, near Vienna, having made an interesting trip recently along the Po River to that location. loca-tion. He says the destruction of factories and plants made necessary by the war is almost unthinkable, and he is happy that the noise of war is over. Ross McArthur EM2c is somewhere some-where in the Pacific with the U. S. Marine service and says things are progressing. They had not heard from him for several weeks. Celebrate July 24 With the amphibious unit of the U. S. Marine Corps in the Pacific, Cpl. C. W. Brinkerhoff writes of their July 24 celebration at his base. He says, "Kay Roun-dy, Roun-dy, Reynol Jennings, Tom Smith and I had a great time. They had sports in the afternoon and a swell program at night with refreshments re-freshments afterward." He likes the News because it brings him word of many of the boys he used to "buddy around with." Pa Pa Ea Home for Visit Cpl. Leslie Hafen, son of Charles Hafen of Santa Clara, returned re-turned August 13 after more than a year's overseas service. He has been code clerk in the Signal Intelligence service and is not expecting ex-pecting a release at present. At least he is to report back to Ft. Monmouth, N. Y. on Sept. 15, for his next assignment. |
