Show Fire Destroys Home In Leeds Thursday LEEDS, Utah A defective flue is believed to have been responsible responsi-ble for the fire which demolished the cement-block, two-story and basement Stirling home at Leeds last Thursday. The blaze inflicted heavy loss on Mr. and Mrs. Clair Stirling who were living there, as well as on their sisters, Miss Fay Stirling and Mrs. Grace S. Leigh, who had their effects stored in the basement and upper story. The fire had gained such proportions pro-portions before being detected that the application of all chemicals chemi-cals available did little to halt the flames, a bucket brigade was powerless and the nearest fire equipment was at Hurricane or St. George. However, Leeds people peo-ple responded valiantly, say the Stirlings, and managed to save all of the furniture on the main floor except in the kitchen and dining room. Their refrigerator and washing machine were saved, but silverware, small electrical appliances, all kitchen utensils and food supplies including hundreds of quarts of fruit stored in the basement, were a total loss. Housing was made available for them in a small cottage until they can rebuild. Leeds people and others have shared with utensils and helped otherwise and Mr. Stirling says they will be able to carry on comfortably for the present. |
