Show Large Crowds Attend St. George Fourth of July Programs Under Sponsorship of Legion-Auxiliary Crowds thronged the Wadsworth theatre Friday morning for the Independence Day program presented pre-sented under direction of the American Legion and Auxiliary. The entire program was well-received and followed serenading of the city by the Martial band directed di-rected by George W. Worthen. ... Numbers on the program included in-cluded two selections by the Mar-tail Mar-tail band; singing of America by the congregation; patriotic dance by Fawn Schmutz and company of young women including Mary Lou Wells, Alice Thompson, Gena Higbee, Adrene Cottam, Ruby Seegmiller and Vivian Covington, and also a solo number by Miss Schmutz, with Mrs. Jack Rick- etss accompanist; brass ensemble selections directed by Stanley Schmutz; etiquette of the American Ameri-can flag by K. M. Cannon; pledge of allegiance to the flag led by Scout Walter Snow; vocal trio, a medley of patriotic songs, Melba Baker, Alice Cannon and Mary Lou Wells with Mae A. Pace at the piano; reading of the Independence Inde-pendence Day message from President Presi-dent Franklin D. Roosevelt by Mrs. Roxey S. Romney, and congregational con-gregational singing of the Star Spangled Banner. Speaker of the day was Mayor D. C. Watson who inspired the audience with his rehearsal of America's history and of the rights and privileges enjoyed by citizens through the Constitution which was so ably drafted by the early patriots of the United States. He stressed the need of greater steadfastness today to rise above the thereatening menace of world war and unite with greater purpose pur-pose than ever to preserve this great heritage. Prayers were by the Auixilarj Chaplain, Mrs. C. C. Wallace. Early afternoon sports for the children and entertainment features fea-tures for older folk took place or the grounds south of the Tabernacle Taber-nacle and in the evening the grand stand at the City Park was packed with an enthusiastic crowd who watched the night softbal games. |
