Show Elias Hunt, 86, Dixie Pioneer, Dies On Sunday, May 13th ENTERPRISE, Utah Monday, May 13, marked fhe passing of Elias Hunt, 86, colorful Dixie pioneer, active colonizer and church worker. He died in St. George at 9 p.m. Monday, due to ailments of age after six weeks of serious illness. Born at Ogden, Utah, Oct. 14, 1858, he was a son of Amos and Rebecca Wiggins Hunt. The family was called to the Dixie Cotton Mission in the winter of 1861, settling in St. George for a short time before going to Clover Valley. His mother died when he was aged six, and he was reared by a kindly stepmother. He was among the first colonizers coloni-zers at Hebron, where he lived for many years, until the town moved as a body to Enterprise in 1908. In both Hobpn and Enterprise he was active in civic and church affairs, serving 22 years as a member of the bishopric and a long period as president of the MIA. On Jan. 15, 1879, he married (Continued on page five) Hunt Death (Continued from first page) Aluna Terry in the St. George Temple. They were the parents of 13 children, ten of whom are living. After her death he married mar-ried Mae Ward of Parowan, who was home economics instructor at Dixie junior college, and moved to St. George where- he spent several years at temple work. She died in 1940. Surviving are seven sons, Elias Frank Hunt of Ivins; George, John, Johnathan, Nephi and Edward Ed-ward L. Hunt, all of Enterprise; Glenn Hunt of St. George; three daughters, Mrs. W. C. Staheli of Provo, Mrs. William Leavitt of Bunkerville, Mrs. Lawrence D. Leavitt of Las Vegas; 69 grandchildren, grand-children, 89 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Emaline Coleman of Teasdale, Utah. He has 11 grandsons and one great-grandson in military service. One grandson. Alma J. Hunt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnathan Hunt of Enterprise was killed in action ac-tion at Normandy, July 6, 1944. |
