Show Firestone Develops New Battery for War-Time War-Time Driving Conditions To meet the critical requirements of wartime driving. The Firestone Tire & Rubber company has developed de-veloped a new passenger car battery bat-tery called the Perma-Life, according ac-cording to Karl Hutchings, manager man-ager of the local Firestone store at St. George. "Special features," says Mr. Hutchings, "have been introduced to enable the battery to give peak performance under the limited driving conditions which are taking a heavy toll of batteries that were built to function func-tion when cars were rolling up big mileage figures. "Batteries built for peacetime Operation," says Mr. Hutchings, "can rarely be kept at full charge under wartime restricted driving, unless the charging rate is greatly increased. When the charging rate is stepped up, the higher charging voltage causes a buckling of the thin plates that ordinarily were used in battery construction. When the charging rate is held at normal, nor-mal, necessitating frequent recharging, re-charging, battery life is again jeopardized and i n most cases greatly shortened. The Firestone Perma-Life has been engineered to withstand high charging rates by utilizing larger and heavier plates to take the stepped-up charging voltage. Spe-c Spe-c i a 1 Fiberglass separator mats have been incorporated in the construction to hold the active compound in the plate. This has been found to increase battery life by as much as 100 per cent. The new battery is equipped with Fil-O-Matic covers to prevent overfilling over-filling and splashing of the solution. |
