Show Professional and Service Projects Show Varied Accomplishments Statewide figures showing the ac- complishments of the Professional and Service Projects in Utah have ' just been released from the office . of Darrel J. Greenwell, state WPA 1 administrator. "These projects I have made definite contributions j to the welfare and culture of the communities in which they are J operating", said Mr. Greenwell. Mr. Greenwell summarized the activities of the Professional and Service Division as follows: 1 Community Service Projects: L The music project has played 954 concerts to a total of 325,632 people, mostly school children who have had the benefit of these programs of symphony music as part of their regular school music appreciation work. Figures compiled for a four year period ending December 31, 1939, indicates that 16 nursery schools operating in 10 counties of the state have greatly assisted (Continued on page eightj WPA Project (Continued from first page) in the physical, social, and mental development of 1327 pre-school children from low-income families. The statewide Recreation Project Pro-ject has provided recreational leadership and facilities in 146 communities in 26 counties of the state. The Adult Education Project has made available free educational educa-tional classes in 60 different subjects. sub-jects. This program has served 116 communities, 11 CCC camps, three Indian reservations, two military reservations, and the State prison, where one-half of the inmates are enrolled in worth while educational activities. The program has also provided f ic--i.i i.t inn in li te LUIiespuilUCiiLC uin uluu i. in Safety in Traffic and Driving, Soil Conservation, Radio, Journalism, Jour-nalism, Forestry, and Auto Mechanics Me-chanics to 1791 persons. The Art Project in Utah, which operates the Utah State Art Center, provided free instruction for a total of 2345 students 'during its first year and brought exhibitions exhi-bitions to 83,807 persons. The statewide Writers' Project is compiling a guide of the state which will be of the utmost value to tourists and to residents. The WPA Sewing Project, which is sponsored by the State Department of Public Welfare, makes clothing and other articles to be released through the County Welfare Departments. The project pro-ject had completed, up to the end of 1939, 812,710 garments and 232,477 other articles. The School Lunch Project, which furnishes a hot lunch to children who are under the necessity neces-sity of carrying a lunch to school, operates in 266 schools of the state and by the end of 1939, had provided 9,987,999 lunches. The State Department of Public Welfare has distributed food stuffs and other items supplied by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation Cor-poration during the period from October 1933 to December 31, 1939. The distribution has amounted amount-ed to 40,258,944 pounds, or about 850 carloads of food stuffs. The value of commodities distributed dis-tributed for the period has amounted to $4,071,645.53. The Historical Records Survey is preparing and publishing the archives of counties, cities and towns of the state so that they will be available to historians, writers, and other interested persons. per-sons.
