Show ST. GEORGE CAMP Py DR. WALTER E. WHALEN, Oamp Surgeon Citizens of communities neighboring neigh-boring CCC camps become "camp conscious" in many ways that never would occur to those in no way directly contacting CCC men. One of the things which seems to interest them from questions frequently asked is how camp sanitation is accomplished. Before a camp is established, it must be ascertained that an adequate supply of safe water is available. Given this the rest is not difficult. The camp establishes it's own sewage system consisting usually of grease traps and septic tanks located to provide gravity flow. Where flush toilets are not feasible feas-ible well screened latrines, the pits of which are daily treated with oil and lime, are erected. When the camp is occupied and in running order, daily inspections in-spections of every unit of the camp are made by the Commanding Command-ing Officer and Surgeon. In mess hall and kitchen, supply sup-ply rooms, cooler house and re- frigerators, all utensils, dishes, pots and pans, floors, walls, ledges, led-ges, in fact every thing and everyplace every-place that may harbor dirt or grease, is examined. The cooks, kitchen police and others concerned in the handling Of food and utensils, in any way, are carefully inspected ' as to personal cleanliness and neat appearance. ap-pearance. The bath house is provided with a foot bath through which each enrollee entering to take a bath must walk, and the solu-, tion therein is a preventative against what is commonly called "athlete's foot". Daily bathing is insisted upon, as is frequent change to fresh clean underclothing undercloth-ing and shirts. Each Saturday morning an inspection in-spection of each man and his equipment is made to ascertain that he has sufficient clean clothing cloth-ing for the week, suitably cleaned, clean-ed, hair trimmed properly and so on. All food furnished by contractors con-tractors is inspected upon delivery deliv-ery and any deemed unfit for any cause is promtly rejected. All in all, every precaution is taken establishing the "physical setup" of a camp, and once occupied oc-cupied never ending vigilance is maintained by those whose responsibility res-ponsibility it Is. |
