Show III FLIERS WIN TRIRD PLACE IN TOURNAMENT, PLAYERS AJEJONDREO By placing third in the fast State Tournament, Dixie definitely definite-ly proved that she had one of the finest high school teams in the state. In addition to this Denby Wade was picked as the outstanding outstand-ing player of the tournament, placing first among the high scorers scor-ers and being given credit for his fine team play. All of the Dixie players were given honorable honor-able mention by the Deseret News in their selection of the outstanding outstand-ing players. The Fliers came to the front with the best scoring record by placing Wade as high scored of the tournament with 57 points, an average of 14.3 per game; Price, second among the forwards with 35 points; Heaton was second sec-ond among the centers with 31, he just missed placing first by two points, being beaten by Baldwin of Beaver who had 32; Frei came in third among the guards by scoring scor-ing 23 points. From the beginning, Coach Lee Hafen's team was a favorite with the fans. This came from the fine spirit shown by the boys and their clever team work. In the last game they gave one of the cleverest exhibitions of passing and ball handling shown by any team in the tournament. Lack of height was undoubtedly one of the factors that kept them from going into the finals. The Ogden team that defeated them and the Jordon team that won first place both had a decided advantage over ov-er the local boys in this respect. At that, had Price been "hot" the way he was in the final game they would surely have gone into the finals. In this game, with JJnitah for third place, Price put (Continued on page nine) |
