Show 'C II Ft: r- I '. ;;;; "'F'"'" f ! - - . : - A & Four Teams to Meet for Play-off in St George March 1, 2, 3 - " ., y. ys V Dixie Junior College, on March 1, 2, and 3, will play host to the four teams who will take part in a round robin tournament to determine de-termine the Inter-Mountain Junior Jun-ior College championship. The tournament will include Dixie, winner of the Southern division, B. A. C. or Snow as second place team, and Ricks winner of the northern division, with Westminster West-minster as the second position team. Whether B. A. C. or Snow is to represent the south will be determined in a playo.T game at the Beaver high school gymnasium gymnas-ium next Saturday night. The "experts" in the northern . part of the state have installed Ricks as the favored team to take the bunting. Their opinion is based on the speed and scoring scor-ing power that these boys have displayed all season. All the men are all-state scholastic p'ayers and the starting team includes in-cludes five of the boys that were in the tournament last year at Cedar. They are playing a brand of ball that the northern critics' say compares favorably with senior sen-ior college aggregations. Their closest game was one -"it.h Westminster; West-minster; they won that by one point. A barnstorming trip through Idaho gave them nine wins in as many starts. So it is easy to see why they have been installed as the favorite in the north where they have been displaying dis-playing their powers. Westminster is likewise looked upon with favor by those who have seen them play. The game that was lost to Ricks could just as easily have been theirs, so closely was it contested. The Purp team is a small scrappy bunch with lots of speed. The offense of the team, which centers cent-ers around Leavitt, Wycherly, and Kuchs, presents some classy floor men who have the ability to score. The main handicap of the team is its lack of height. Dixie, with Coach Hafen at the helm, has one of the strongest teams to ever represent the school. With plenty of reserve strength and first team material, Coach Hafen has worked out a smooth working team that is good defensively and packs a scoring punch when scores are needed. In both the games here with B. A. C, the Cedar boys led through the first half but in the second half Dixie's defense functioned func-tioned in fine style while the- offense of-fense went out and won the game. There isn't any doubt about the strength of Ricks. Every game they have played this year has indicated ability. Likewise. Westminster isn't to be taken lightly. Any team that could hold Ricks to a one point vict-1 ory is good. However, we here in Dixie are not willing to count our boys out until the final I whistle. Without a doubt the' critics in the north are pred.iu-diced pred.iu-diced having had no chance to see the local team in action. After seeing both Snow and B. A. C. play, it would seem to this writer that B. A. C. should have the edge, however, with both having won two games all indications indi-cations are that they are of equal i strength. Whichever wins, we know, that they will ably repre- j sent the southern division. j Since taking over the reins at Dixie, Coach Hafen has entered , a team in every tournament and each time has been in the final . playoff but so far a blue and j white team has not been able to ' win the championship. Dixie supporters are hoping that thin time will be different and that the 'local school will be able to tack up a nice new bunting on the wall of the gymrasaim. Each team is allowed nine men. Those that would seem to have made their position on the Dixie team are: Captain Church at right forward; Neagle, left forward; Schmutz, center; Benson, Ben-son, center and guard; Pectol. guard; Stratton guard. .This leaves three men to be chosen from the following men who have been playing on the team this year: Wilson, forward; Milne, forward; Reed Wilson, forward; Whitehead, guard; Sullivan, guard. However, none of the above players has a cinch on his position and it is possible that Coach Hafen may change his regular re-gular starting line-up. The Northern teams are due to arrive in St. George on Wednesday, Wednes-day, February 28, and each will be given the opportunity of practising prac-tising on the college gymnasium floor to acquaint themselves with the scene of action. Bleachers have been built to accomodate the crowd and with the interest that has been shown to date as a criterion, reserve seats will be gone long -before the starting whistle blows and late comers will be lucky to find standing room. Those who attended at-tended the B. A. C. games here this year, will remember the large crowd of enthusiasts that turned out for those games. In addition to local interest this time there will also be a championship champ-ionship at stake and probably the one night that one would miss wou'd be the night that would decide the series. The teams are all high caliber and evenly matched, and our only on-ly comment as we swing into the home stretch is "get your season ticket, hold your hat and here we go." |
