Show 8 School Dist. Give Contest In Spelling During the month of February a uniform spelling contest was conducted in the schools throughout through-out the county from 'the 3rd to the 8th inclusive. This year a written contest replaced the oral contests of previous years. The teachers themselves choosing the words. Each teacher sent in a list of fifty words which was supposed sup-posed to be a sample of the type of spelling words being studied in their grade. An official list of fifty words was chosen from the lists submitted by the teacher? teach-er? and used for the contest. A comparison of the results for each grade- and for each sohol reveals some interesting results. The median (which is the middle scoie beginning at tne lowest and working toward the highest score) was found for each grade. Below is listed the three schools having the highest grade median: med-ian: Third Grade: 1st, Veyo 96 per cent; 2nd and 3rd Leeds 9 4 per cent, New Harmony 94 per cent. Fourth Grade: 1st, Leeds 96 per cent; 2nd, LaVerkin 92 per cent; 3rd Springdale SO per cent. Fifth Grade: 1st, New Harmony." Har-mony." 94 per 'cent; 2nd, Spring-dale Spring-dale 90 per cent; 3rd, Vayo. 84 per cent. Sixth Grade: 1st, Veyo 82 per cent; 2nd and 3rd, Washington 78 per cent. Leeds 7S per cent. Seventh Grade: 1st. Veyo, 80 per cent; 2nd and "3rd, Gunlock, 76 per cent; New Harmony 76 per cent. Eighth Grade: 1st, Leeds 9 4 per cent; 2nd Hurricane 8 4 per cent; 3rd Washington SO per cent. The average of the mediums for all six grades of each school shows: Leeds, 85; New Harmony, 81.6; Central, 77; Veyo 75; LaVerkin, La-Verkin, 72; Santa Clara, 70.6; Springdale, 6S.7; Washington, 66; Toquerville, 61.5; St. George 60.5; Gunlock, 59.8; Hurricane, 56.12; Rockville, 54.3; Enterprise, Enter-prise, 50.1; Virgin, 47.6. The average medium for all schools in the county was 65.7. The highest individual scores for each grade and those receiving receiv-ing 100 per cent in the contest are: Third grade: Muriel Iver-son, Iver-son, Washington; Cleyon DeMill, Rockville; Laurel Jackson, Toquerville; To-querville; Leon Watson, Carol Sullivan, June Allen, Dick Schmutz, Dorothy Chadburn, Joe Haycock, Audrey Morris, St. George; Lois Chadburn, Veyo; Cherril McMullin. Leeds; Carma Sullivan, Leeds; Joe Jackson, Springdale; Clara Ruesch, I Springdale; Elsie Neilson, Gun-lock; Gun-lock; Eugene Woodbury, LaVerkin; LaVer-kin; Theo Asay, LaVerkin, all received 10 0 per cent. Those receiving 100 per cent in the 4th grade are: Mack Ol-sen. Ol-sen. Leeds; Ernest Gilley, Leeds; Mary Sterling, Leeds; Allen Strunk, Springdale. Perfect scores for the fifth grade: Josephine Hale, New Harmony; Har-mony; Beth Gubler, Santa Clara; Cherill Snow, Santa Clara; Ben-nie Ben-nie Beatty, LaVerkin. "She highest scores for the sixth grade: Para Lu Wallace 100 per cent, LaVerkin; Lenna Cox, 98 per cent, Rockville; Delay Woodbury, 98 per cent, St. George. The highest scores for the 7th grade: Lena Jolley 9 6 per cent, Leeds; Gordon Allen, 96 per cent, LaVerkin; Fern Chadburn, 9 6 per cent, Veyo; Delmina Earl, 9 6 per cent. Virgin. Perfect scores in the eipflith grades were made by Verda Prince. New Harmony; Norma Cook, Hurricane; Phyllis Neagle, Hurricane. It is the opinion of the principals princi-pals of the schools that a spelling spell-ing contest of this nature has many advantages over the oral spelling type of contest.
