behind by two points after three outI quarters but finally the Utes came out outon outon I on top 62 45 behind 11 straight points by Brian McNamara Kevin Montague and Cary Hamilton early in the fourth quarter to pull away for first place in the Basin Tournament in Altamont Saturday The Uintah Utes jumped out to a 20 2 lead after only omy 15 seconds of action in the first quarter on a field goal by McNamara and a free throw by McNamara delivered a point one lead of 3 to 2 to the Utes However Altamont grabbed a lei lead d of 43 4 on a field goal by 65 Eddie Fisher Traveling problems bugged the Utes as well as field goal failures so they went to the free throw route for a 54 5 lead on charity tosses by Doug Bowen and Jeff Drollinger Altamont regained a one point lead on a field goal by Tracy Thayne but a three point play by Mon Mon- Montague Montague tague plus a two pointer by Drollinger gave the Utes a iso is o lead lead Montague Montague con con- connected connected on his basket after several misses by the Utes Altamont scored a field goal to cut tah's lead to two points but a field goal by goalby Drollinger returned a four point ad ad- ad advantage vantage to the Uintah team However Uintah went into a scoring drought and Altamont lit up the lights on the scoreboard on two pointers by Adam Christensen Brent Miles and Fisher for fora fora a 1412 14 first quarter advantage The Utes put in a field goal to tie up the game at 14 Points and another two two- pointer by Drollinger gave Uintah a two point lead of 1614 16 Drollinger missed a dunk shot which would have given Uin Uin- Uintah tah a four point lead and Altamont fired in a two pointer to tie up the game at 1616 A field goal by McNamara delivered a 1816 18 advantage to the Utes but a field goal by Fisher and two free throws by Mark Todd presented a two two- point lead of 20 ia by Altamont Uintah's Hamilton hit one out of two free throws to reduce Altamont's lead to toone toone one point and an offensive foul by Bowen took a field goal away from the Utes tes and anda a one point lead Fisher put in two free throws for a 22 19 advantage and free throws by Hamilton Mike Weldon and Drollinger placed the Utes ahead at 2322 23 The Longhorns fired in a field goal and two free throws for a 2623 26 advantage Two free throws by Weldon cut the L lead to one point but Altamont fired in a field goal for a 2825 28 lead The Utes went right to work and McNamara fired in a field goal after several missed shots by the Utes to cut the Altamont lead to one point Weldon put in a shot at the buzzer to give the Utes a halftime lead of 29 to 28 26 Uintah grabbed a three point lead on ona ona a field goal by Bowen but a rebound basket by Fisher cut Uintah's lead to one point Once again the Utes garnered a three point lead on a hook shot for two points by Montague Fisher put in a field goal for Altamont and Drollinger fired in ina ina a shot for a three point lead However Altamont kept on hanging tough as Christensen fired in two free throws to narrow Uintah's lead to one point The Utes had only a lead of one point but Weldon came to the rescue as he scored six straight points to give his team a seven point lead of Weldons Weldon's first field goal was a rebound hoop and he pulled a good fake for his se- se second second cond two two pointer pointer Weldon put In his third field goal and his defender Todd almost fell out of the gym as he hit the exit doors and the doors came open Todd recovered and returned to the game Altamont went on a scoring streak of their own as they poured in five points to cut Uintah's lead to two points Ute guard Mark Wilkinson fired in a field goal to return a four point lead to the the Utes but Fisher popped in an outside shot to make the score 43 to 41 in are Gary Weight head coach Vie Vic Anderson junior varsity coach and Gil Limb sophomore re coach by Montague broke the game wide open for a 13 point Ute lead of 54 41 The Utes scored eight more points on free throws by Drollinger and field goals by McNamara and Hamilton to win the game and first place by the score of 62 to 45 McNamara was the leading scorer in inthe inthe the game for the Utes at 18 points He fired in seven field goals and hit 4 out of 6 free throws Drollinger Weldon and Montague scored 11 points and Hamilton fired in ten points Bowen popped in three points and Wilkinson scored two points The Utes put in 16 out of 27 free throws Fisher and Christensen were the top scorers for Altamont at 14 points Todd put in seven points and Miles scored four fourpoints fourpoints points Jeff Brotherson Tracy Thayne and Tim Thayne scored two points The Longhorns hit 9 out of 13 free throws When asked to comment on the title game with Altamont Uintah Ute coach Gary Weight remarked I give a lot of credit to Altamont They did a good job with their 3 23 match up zone It match match- matched ed up real well with our offense I thought Altamont was a very good team Their two guards Todd and Christensen kept them in the game and Fisher had a good goodgame goodgame game We got more patience and looked for the good percentage shot We shot under 27 percent in the first half
