candidates selected to run for office have only taken a passive interest and have performed practically no cam laign chores the election re cords also show that the elections have had only a few participating in choosing of ficiala for the most important posts in the tribal government some dissenting groups of the tribe have actually discouraged cou raged the eligible voters urging them to boycott the elections in the 1957 elec elections eions only 12 per cent of the eligible voters in the uintah and whiteriver Whiter White lver river bands participated the successful whiteriver Whlter White iver river and uintah representatives each received 12 votes which was enough to seat them thein in office in the 1950 elections the uintah and whiteriver Whlter White iver river bands had bad only about VA percent of the electorate participating eleven votes for the uintah can candidate didat 8 and 15 13 votes for the Whiter lver candidate was waa enough to put them in office members of the uncompahgre band have had a little better record in going to the polls during tribal elections in 1957 the records show 17 per cent of the uncompahgre voters turned out imd the winning candidate received a total of 20 votes in the 1959 election approximately 40 percent of the gres voted aro ted and the successful candidate received 57 votes 1 it t was also reported in 1958 special to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of a uintah band representative the election had to be held three times before 19 interested voters finally came out to cast votes for seven candidates it was reported that the seven candidates voted thus only 12 voters not actually running for office showed enough interest to exercise one of the most important tribal rights in this election the successful candidate received a total of 9 votes the mathematicians in the tribe figured that the successful candidates candidate eown own immediate family put him in office to represent some members tribal officials were encouraged cou raged in election which appears to be almost feverish compared to the lethargic attitudes of the ute voters inthe past hopes are am high for a record turnout on march 10
