Show THIS WEEK I 1 in washington with aunton davidson vla Vl 4 THE SPENDERS NDE IRS wh what t page book cost out our g government overn ment several million dollars to prepare and print prini that probably will not be read by more then than one hundred people it it is the 1062 1962 fiscal ciscal year federal bud get it will not be read in 10 full by all of the 73 members of congress who have the re lor for approving changing or disapproving the more than thousand spending requests in the huge volume those members serve on the house and senate appropriations committees the most disturbing thing about the tremendous increase in big government spending Is that so few who foot the bill seem to be disturbed about it too few of us ua know who spends our tax dollars how they are spent or what they are akre spent for too few of us ever take the trouble to inquire sterol decisions on how to spend more than 80 billion dollars will be made by the 80 50 mern mem bers of the house committee and 23 members of the senate committee behind locked doors the hearings on government spending are among the most secretive in washington the only witnesses heard are the splendora sp endora endors themselves spokesmen for r the govern me ment moke d departments paa m ts and agen agencies which intend to do the spending pending those who are being asked to foot the bill are never heard the big budget book never is anything more than a request for appropriations it is a compilation sad and a total of what the several hundred spending groups think they will need to tarry carry on and anc usually to expand their operations the federal government govern men expects to have an income of about 83 billion an all time ioime record high from tax collect collections lons this year it will spend at least that amount dividing it up the appropriations committees will begin detailed consideration of the budget shortly A dozen or to so subcommittees each handling the budget requests of one or more departments or agencies will begin closed door hearings most of the subcommittees will spend hundreds of hours in careful and painstaking questioning of heads and budget officers of the departments and agencies whose budget they must pass on they will go over each budget item by item when each subcommittee has completed hearings and written recommendations it will report to the full committee corn which will then meet to hear and pass on the reports chairman of th the he S senate te 1 appropriations C committee is carl hayden of arizona who has served 35 33 years in the senate after 14 years in the be house rep clarence cannon of missouri chairman of the house committee has been a i member of that committee for 36 30 years most if not all of the mem bers of both committees would like more economy in government and it is to their credit edit that they have not given many of the free spending departments and agencies all of the money they would like to spend it they could get it |
