Many top ranked cowboys will compete in the 33rd annual Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Vernal at the Uintah Uin-tah County Fairgrounds. Roundup E?odeo begins Thursday The 33rd annual Dinosaur RounduD Rodeo will be in Vernal at the Uintah Uin-tah County Fairgrounds, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The rodeo will begin each evening at 7 p.m. and a parade will be Saturday at 6 p.m. Vernal's rodeo is the only Professional Profes-sional Rodeo Cowboy Association approved ap-proved rodeo in the Uintah Basin. Family night will be Thursday and advance ad-vance tickets can be purchased at the trailer in the center of town, Bull Ring in Vernal and Smiley's Western Wear in Roosevelt. A dance will be held Friday and Saturday night at the Cowboy Corral, starting at 9 p.m. The music will be by the Trespassers from Denver. Jackpot team roping will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. The stock contractor is D. A. Swanny Kirby. The top six cowboys in the 1982 all-around all-around cowboy standings are: Chris Lybbert, Coyote, California, first, $123,709; Bruce Ford, Kersey, Colorado, Col-orado, second, $113,715; Jimmie Cooper, Monument, New Mexico, third, $103,704; Roy Cooper, Durant, Oklahoma, fourth $99,190; Dave Brock, Azle, Texas, fifth, $92,292 and Dee Pickett, Caldwell, Idaho, sixth, $91,986. Five of the six cowboys, the two Coopers, Brock, Pickett, and Ford have taken part in Dinosaur Roundup Rodeos of the past. Roy Cooper of Durant, Oklahoma, won the 1982 calf roping crown at $95,694 and Stan Williamson, Kellyville, Oklahoma, placed first in-steer in-steer wrestling at $60,797. Tee Woolman, Fredonia, Texas, collected first place in team roping at $66,739 and Leo Camarillo, Lockeford, California, Califor-nia, nabbed second at $66,610. Mike Beers of Rufus, Oregon and Dee Pickett tied for third place team roping rop-ing honors. Henson, Small, Logue, Young, Feild, Sampson, Gay, Woolman, Camarillo and Beers have competed in previous Dinosaur Roundup Rodeos in Vernal. Danny Brady won bareback bronc riding titles at Vernal in 1981 and 1982 and the Henderson, Nevada, cowboy competed in the National Finals Rodeo in 1982. Brady won the 1981 title at Vernal Ver-nal with a score of 81 and won the 1982 crown with a score of 73. Kevin Small of Dubois, Idaho and Mike Miller of Big Piney, Wyoming, grabbed first place honors last year at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo in the saddle bronc event with marks of 74. Jan Phillips of Grand Junction and Richard Wolf of Goshen, Utah, tied for first place in the bull riding event at 78 points. Charles Sampson captured third place at 75 points at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo and went on to take the world title. 1970 PRCA team roping champion, Allen Bach, joined up with Jake Barnes for first place in the team roping rop-ing event at 5.9 and Dick Aronson of Tempe, Arizona, won the calf roping title at 10.2. Leo Camarillo, a former world champion, placed fourth at 10.6. Dan Ackey of Las Vegas, Nevada won the steer wrestling event at 5.1. The Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo has attracted many top ranked cowboys, but although many of the stars have shined at the Vernal rodeo some have been forced to take a backseat to many lesser known cowboys. |
