Show Union snares 2nd av Bo:: Elder frraeetf Union High School pocketed second place in the Richardson Memorial Tournament Tour-nament at Box Elder Saturday. Pleasant Grove edged Union for first place by nine points and Union beat out Box Elder by six points for second. Box Elder placed third and Nampa, Idaho, placed fourth. Shane Frost, 98, Union captured first place when he decisioned Curtis Beames, Box Elder, 7-5. Frost also had the fastest pin in the meet at 34 seconds. Jeff Samuels, 138, placed first when he pinned pinn-ed McNeill of Viewmont. Bardett Fausett, 112, placed second when he was beaten by a Nampa tussler. Stacy Hadlock, 119, placed second when he lost to Jim Smoot, Box Elder, 7-3. Davey Nielsen, 132, lost to Box Elder's Brad Williams on a decision and placed second. Mervin Glines, 145, and Ken Winn, 185, nabbed second places. Winn was defeated by Pleasant Grove's Mark Harvey and Glines lost to a Nampa mat-man. mat-man. Shawn Cuch, 105, placed third and Gar Powell, heavyweight, netted fourth. "Pleasant Grove, Unidh and Box Elder were all real close together in the fight for first place. We (Union) were ahead for quite a while. All three teams were right in there for first place. We beat Pleasant Grove in the Viewmont Tour nament and lost to Box Elder and then we beat Box Elder in this tournament, but lost to Pleasant Grove," said Union coach Brad Isom. "We had more wrestlers in the championship finals, but Pleasant Grove won the tournament in the consolation matches. They had more kids battling for third and fourth place than the other schools." Union toppled Wasatch in Heber City Wednesday, 39-20, in a region meet. The Cougars forfeited the 98 pound match because Frost was sick. Robert Durham, 105, lost on a decision and Fausett, 112, pinned his man. Hadlock, 119, won on a decision and Ronnie Rich, 126, was pinned pinn-ed by Young, a defending state champ. Nielsen, 132, won on a decision and Samuels, 138, pinned his man. Glines, 145, and Kenny Anderton, 155, won on pins. Charles Percival, 167, got pinned. Ken Winn, 185, won on a forfeit and Powell, heavyweight, pinned his matman. The Cats will battle Lehi on the road Wednesday and will host the Union JV Tournament Friday and Saturday. Union will host Morgan Jan. 18 and will take part in the Green River Tournament, Jan. 21-22. "We have been wrestling well. We have competed with the best teams and we have battled teams double our size. We are a 2-A school and we have defeated 3-A and 4-A teams. The main thing is to win state," commented Isom. |
