SPORTS FLASHBACKS Uintah Utes topple Alterra but lose to Roosevelt team A basketball story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Jan. 25, 1951. Uintah continued its winning ways Friday Fri-day Jan. 19 to remain tied with Duchesne for the lead in the Uintah division, Region 5, hoop chase. It was a tight squeeze for the Utes but under the direction of Coach Clark Greenhalgh, they managed to come out ahead of the Alterra Spartans, 29-25. The Utes got off to a good start during the first quarter when they piled up a 6-2 lead over the Spartans. Uintah continued to score during the second quarter but then failed to keep pace with the Spartans Spar-tans who scored 12 points to tie the game at the half 14-14. In the second half the Spartans went on to take the lead from the Utes and in the third quarter wound up with Alterra in front, 19-16. During the final period the Utes made 13 points to come out on top 29-25. Both teams played good hard basketball basket-ball and Don Barr took honors for the game by scoring 12 points. VERNAL OILERS LOSE GAME TO PROVO QUINT A strong Oscar Carlson of Provo nipped nip-ped the Vernal Oilers 35-27 Saturday night in a football field benefit game played before a good crowd in the Uintah Uin-tah High School gym. The first half was a torrid battle as both clubs displayed moments of brilliance in the building of a close halftime score of 26-23 for Provo. Accurate Ac-curate long distance shooting gave the visitors their lead. Benny Fullmer, former B.A.C. star, led the first half scoring scor-ing with 16, mostly accurate set shots inside Vernal's slow moving zone defense. Fullmer collected five more points in the second half for game honors with 21 markers. Jack Woodbury led the Oilers with 11 and Frank Wright collected col-lected six. This Saturday, Jan. 27, the Oilers will be hosts to a strong independent squad, Tooele Ordnance Club, which has been meeting Utah's best. This is the same group that came to Vernal two years ago and defeated the baseball boys by 30 points on the diamond. Tooele Ordnance is the base club of the Tooele Depot and they go all out to secure winning teams, assuring fans that a fine, close game is in prospect. TOOELE ORDNANCE HANDS OILERS SECOND LOSS Tooele Ordnance Depot's hot shooting team dumped Vernal's Oilers Saturday 66-58 to hand the locals their second loss in as many weeks. Tooele jumped to a 10-1 first quarter lead. Vernal began controlling con-trolling the boards in the final half and closed the gap greatly but time cut the rally short. Ashcraft, accurate shooting Tooele forward, for-ward, led the game scoring with 19 counters while Johnstun, clever drive-in artist, helped with 15. Woodbury and Ashton scored best for the Oilers.
