Show , tzzTxCh Dr-Richard - Luekenga j Ljiirv. Headaches? maybe your eyes are not round What is astigmatism? It simply means the eye is not perceiving a simple point image. Because the eye is not receiving a single clear point image we get a double dou-ble image or one that is distorted. This causes some problems such as headaches and eye strain. Astigmatism is caused by irregular surface curvatures on the surfaces of the eye. This could take place either on the front surface of the eye, the cornea, or inside the eye in the retina which is the tissue that contains all the visual cells. The most common of these surfaces where astigmatism takes place is the cornea. Instead of the cornea being perfectly round like a basketball, it is ovai . .'Ted. The two different curves on the from .- rnce of the eye produces two different images. This may appear as a ghost image higher and to the side of the real image. Persons suffering from astigmatism may also notice that certain lines of a letter may appear blurry. W'hen astigmatism occurs it can cause problems of eye strain and headaches normally located in the front portion of the head as well as to the sides. Headaches occur because the muscles around the eye are pulling, trying to get the eye in the best position possible for a good image. The result of the excessive pulling is a headache or eye strain. Persons Per-sons may also experience a feeling of things being distorted or just not right, caused by the distorted surface. These feelings may be more pronounced after long periods of viewing television, at a theater or long periods of driving or near work. |
