UTAH NETS NCAA TITLE The University of Utah women's gymnastics team captured the NCAA championship with a total of 148.6 points and Cal State-Fullerton placed second at 144.15. The L'tes won the AIAW title in 1981. Utah freshman Sue Stednitz won the individual in-dividual all around championship. Stednitz nosed out teammate Christa Canary, 37.2 to 37.1 for the all around crown. Mary Ayotte-Law, Oregon State and Heidi Anderson, Penn State, tied for third place at 36.85. Sandra Smith, LSU and Elaine Alfano, Utah, tied for first place in the vault at 9.5. UCLA's Sharon Shapiro placed third at 9.4. Stednitz, Utah, and Ann Woods, Florida, tied for fourth place at 9.3 and Utah's Megan McCunniff tied for sixth place with three other girls at 9 2. Utah's McGunniff collected first place in the balance beam at 9.6 and Christa Canary, Utah, and Shapiro tied for second at 9.45. Stednitz placed fourth at 9.4. Suzie Kellems, USC, picked up top honors in the floor exercise at 9.6. Placing for Utah in the floor exercise were: Linda Kardos, third, 9.4; Stednitz, fifth, 9.3 and Canary, sixth, 9.25. Lisa Shirk, Pitt; Jeri Cameron, Arizona State and Julie Garrett, Alabama, tied for first place in the uneven bars at 9.4. SIXERS END CELTIC STREAK The Boston Celtics' winning streak ended at 18 games when they were bombed by the Philadelphia 76ers, 116-98, 116-98, Sunday in a National Basketball Association game. The 76ers were led by Andrew Toney at 23 points. Boston never led in the game as their nine game home winning streak over Philadelphia was snapped. The 76ers won just one week after losing to Boston at Philadelphia 123-111. The 76ers led 26-15 after the first quarter as Boston made just 25 percent of its field goal attempts. The Philadelphia crew then started the second quarter with a nine point run that built their lead to 35-15 with 10:31 left in the first half. Mike Bantom started the spurt with a three-point three-point play, and followed with a tip-in. Julius Er-ving, Er-ving, who had 21 points, then capped a fastbreak with a dunk, and a 12-foot jumper by Darryl Dawkins closed the outburst. Boston, whose last loss came on Feb. 21 in Seattle, remained tied with the 1969-70 New York Knicks for the NBA's third longest winning streak. Los Angeles holds the record for the longest winning streak at 33 games, set in the 1971-72 season. LOUISIANA TECH NETS CROWN Louisiana Tech's Janice Lawrence sparked a decisive 26-4 spurt in the first half and led the top ranked Lady Techsters to a 76-62 victory over No. 2 ranked Cheyney State in the first NCAA women's basketball championship game, Sunday at Nor-thfold, Nor-thfold, Va. Louisiana Tech, 35-1, won last year's AIAW title. Lawrence scored 12 of her 20 points in Tech's key surge, which put Louisiana Tech ahead 40-26 40-26 at intermission. |
