' AVA OSv ' ' J Y.A S I I , .t t f I ic--1 ' V ' a X, I : JN0N COUGAR, Ron Gates, connects with the baseball for a j JSe hit during the Cougars' doubleheader with the Wasps, Thursday. thump Wcoscifch Wasps, -1 Wasatch baseballers delivered "smart remarks" to Union's pitcher, Lonnie Sammaripa as they hoped to upset the hurler, but Sammaripa enjoyed en-joyed the last laugh as he fired a one-hitter one-hitter and guided the Cougars to a 9 to 1 victory over the Wasps in the first game of a doubleheader in Roosevelt, Thursday. Union jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ron Gates was walked and stole second based. Steve Robb struck out for the second out and Brent Fenn was the next batter for the Cougars. Gates stole third base and scored the Union crew's first run as the ball sailed over the third baseman's head. The Cougars added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 4-0 advantage. Dean Townsend led off with a double and advanced to third base on a single by. Sammaripa, who stole second base. Wade Cooper singled to drive in Townsend and Sammaripa moved to third base. Kenny Anderton flied out for the second out, but John Blake blasted the ball for a triple and Sammaripa and Cooper crossed home plate. Robb performed a .triple headfirst slide combination as he slid headfirst into first base, second base and third base, but he was unable to gain a headfirst slide across home plate as he was stranded at third base in the bottom bot-tom of the third inning. The big inning for the Wasatch Wasps was the fourth, but the Heber Crew didn't take advantage as they scored only one run. Dane Anderson and Kohler were walked and an error placed Mark Berg at first base and loaded up the bases. Anderson crossed home plate on an error to cut Union's lead to 4 to 1 and Mair reached first base on a fielder's choice. Wasatch had a chance to tie up the game at 4-4, but Sammaripa slammed the door right in their faces as he struck out Sperry, Call and Adams to end the Wasps' threat at more runs. The Cougars acquired a 5 to 1 lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cooper belted a double and stole third base. Cooper scored Union's fifth run on an overthrow at third base. Wasatch continued to have fielding problems in the bottom of the fifth inning as Ron Gates gained a triple when the ball darted between the center fielder's legs. Gates crossed home plate on another strange play as the ball dropped between three Wasatch fielder's for a single by Robb. Fenn blasted the baseball for a double when the ball was bobbled by a Wasatch outfielder and Robb moved to third base. Townsend gained a single, which drove in Fenn and Robb for an 8 to 1 Union advantage. Townsend advanced to second base as nobody was covering the bag and gained third base on a passed ball. Sammaripa and Cooper were walked and Townsend scored on a high throw on a pick off attempt at third base for a 9-1 Union lead. Wasatch's first batter in the top of the sixth inning grounded out, but Sammaripa Sam-maripa struck out the next three batters bat-ters (the third batter struck out, but reached first base , when the Union catcher dropped the third strike) to make the final score: Union, 9 and Wasatch. 1. The Wasps' Berg led off with a single in the top of the second innina. but -Sammaripa hurled no hits in the rest of the game to improve his region record to 4-0. Sammaripa struck out 12 batters and walked three. Union had 11 hits in the game and scored nine runs. Townsend was the big slugger for the Cougars at 3 for 4. Townsend had two singles and a double.
