Show r. r Uinta ii Note Tuti r By Dy Dr Wayne Reid Superintendent Return of the old fashioned spelling bee and Uintah superstars Spelling bees and superstars super superstars superstars stars compatible You bet betl Uintah School District is off and running again to make our curriculum relevant and at the same time providing Interschool interschool In In- competition only this time it involves the academics and physical education without athletics Each elementary school and each junior high school in our district will hold their Individual in individual In In- wide school-wide spelling bees wherein students will actually compete against each other for a place on that schools school's spelling team Only grades 8 4 will be eligible to participate in order to correspond to the state rules and regulations School winners will enter the district contest directed by John Childs of the district staff Unfortunately only one winner from the district will represent our area at the state contest Students from throughout the district may be seen carefully studying words bringing home words to work on and a general climate of excitement is prevailing Whereas the district contest is being sponsored by bythe the Uintah Board Doard of Education the state contest is being sponsored by the Deseret News in cooperation with the the State PTA and the State Board of Education Certificates Certificates Certificates for recognizing winners winners winners win win- ners will be made available by the Deseret News Locally cert certificates for school winners and then for district winners will be given In addition a traveling trophy will be given to the elementary school which scores highest in the district meet By April 1 all district meets must be completed with a winner selected Regional competitions must be completed completed completed com com- by April 15 and the State Spelling Bee is to be held in Salt Lake City on n April 29 2930 The winner of the state will receive an expense paid trip to Washington DC D.C. to compete in inthe inthe inthe the National Spelling Bee on June 6 Contests in our schools will be conducted along guidelines for forthe forthe forthe the national championships with eliminations on a miss out and basis in the traditional Spelling Bee manner Words used in the finals will be selected from the Words of the Champions book from the lists used in the various city and regional contests and from Websters Webster's Third New International International In In- terna Dictionary Words will be pronounced according to the diacritical markings in Websters Webster's Dictionary Word may be re-pronounced re defined or used in a sentence Other rules may be obtained from various school principals and times limes and dates should be obtained obtained obtained ob ob- from these gentlemen as well In addition under the direction of Mr Ted Taylor of the district staff we will culminate te our elementary Every Child a Winner program in physical education with an elementary version of the television show Superstars Superstars Superstars Super stars A traveling trophy willbe will willbe willbe be given to the winning elementary school with district winner receiving Uintah Superstars T There will be a boy and girl division Under the format of the program two students from each grade level will enter on behalf of their school into the district meet Principals will set up their own wide school-wide meets to determine the win win- ners Parents are enco encouraged raged to check with either the principal of the school or Mr Taylor at atthe atthe atthe the district office for further details Basically students will be required red to climb jump run coordinate movements etc to time on a specially constructed course near the new board office This special event will take place during the spring when the weather permits So if your child is seen jumping a puddle of water climbing a rope running through tires etc dont don't be alarmed Its It's just his way of getting prepared to become a Uintah Superstar |
