Show A group of local citizens citizen concerned with the inadequate facilities at the Uintah County and Vernal City dog pounds ponds have raised 2000 to go towards a new animal shelter facility The money has all been dona donated ted tedor or raised through cake and bakery sales rummage sales and personal donations some as far away as Salt Lake City was raised in one night at atthe atthe atthe the Vernal race tr track ck Several local women have led out in organizing the group called People upholding pets in a constructive organized effort to improve the condition of Vernal's animal shelter The group now reports that they have a problem with some of their impatient donors who want their money back because nothing is being done to get a new animal shelter A representative of the concerned citizens told us that they would like Vernal City and Uintah County to each match their 2000 and start building a anew anew anew new animal shelter The representatives said that more money could be raised once definite plans were begun to improve the situation We have talked to county and city officials about the dog pounds and they have also expressed their desire to do something to improve the facility We have also heard some local taxpayers say they dont don't want their tax dollars going to an expensive animal shelter facility We Weare are of the opinion that it is isnow isnow isnow now time to get together and make some constructive plans to build a new shelter Public input is needed to help decide the problems of location size cost maintenance and operation of a new animal shelter We would suggest a aboard aboard aboard board or an association organization with representation representation representation tation from the city county and the concerned citizens to operate the animal shelter similar to the plan used by four representative groups in planning our recreational facilities We have had over a year to cool down from the damaging tactics and charges made by bythe bythe bythe the Utah Humane Society concerning our pounds Now it itis itis itis is time to face the problem and work towards improving the situation with some some realistic plans If the right approach is used we are sure the gone dog problem at the animal shelters can be improved to the satisfaction of all Foremost in the minds of our local water leaders is the pending fate of the Jensen Unit of the Central Utah water project With the deadline for awarding the low bid on the dam and reservoir scheduled the end of this month and the determination showed by President Carter to cut out all impractical water reclamation projects the situation may get pretty rocky We hope that when the political temperatures lower reason will rule and the dire need of additional water sources sources will influence those at atthe atthe atthe the purse strings level to realize the wise investment our reclamation projects provide in conserving our water ces t tIn In a recent Rural Electric Newsletter it was reported that approximately 20 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were produced by nuclear power plants in January Filling this demand of electricity by other sources of energy would have required 32 million barrels of oil nearly 13 percent of current monthly production i or million cubic feet of natural gas more than 10 percent of current monthly production or 9 96 6 million tons of coal about 17 percent of current monthly production The newsletter stated that tha t the nation may have to spend up to 66 billion developing new energy sources over the next decade |
