Show I Second earthquake strikes I i NW Uintah Basin Tuesday t The second moderate earthquake earthquake earthquake ear ear- in 11 days struck the northeastern Uintah Basin Tuesday October 11 ti at am a.m. according to the University of Utah seismograph station The latest shock was near the location of the Sept 30 JO 4 19 am a.m. earthquake that registered 44 on the Richter scale about 26 miles northwest of Duchesne about nine miles southwest of Moon Lake I The Tuesday shock registered 4 41 according to measurements measurements measurements measure measure- ments at the U. U of U. U seismographic stations The quake was felt in the area reported but no reports of damage have been received by byU U U. U of U. U scientists Tuesday Dr Walter Waller J J. J Arabasz Research Associate Professor of Geology and Geophysics University of Utah said that because the latest shock is comparable to the one 11 days ago it is not considered a simple aftershock The U U. U of Us U.'s seismograph stations and the national earthquake earthquake earthquake ear ear- information service tentatively place the epicenter of the new quake within a few miles of the earlier quake Field studies with 12 portable seismographs seismograph conducted in the earthquake area to study the small continuing aftershocks and ground motion have been going on since the first ear ear- Dr Kenneth L. L Cook Professor of Geophysics U U. U of ofU U U. U Seismograph Station said the 12 mobile units are still in inthe inthe inthe the field and will provide valuable information in defining the area and nd magnitude of the early Tuesday morning quake Dr Cook is asking that a second questionnaire be filled out by people in the area of the thelast thelast thelast last earthquake A study will be made from the questionnaires received to determine the damage if any and approximate approximate approximate ap ap- ap- ap proximate area and severity throughout the Uintah Basin The questionnaire should be filled out as soon as possible and mailed to Dr Cook so the study can be as complete as possible Results of the survey will be published in a subsequent issue of the Vernal Express |
