Show enrollment continues to climb A need for higher education In Inthe Inthe inthe the Uintah Basin was realized by the residents In 1959 It 11 was wasat wasat wasat at this time they Influenced the Utah State Legislature to authorize establishing a junior college In the Basin Funding was withheld however pending further study Additional statutes were added to the junior college authorization Intile in inthe n the tile 1961 and 1963 sessions of the legislature and the Issue was tabled In 1967 a n delegation went to the legislature to get a bill introduced to provide funds fund to the State Board of Education to start the program using existing facilities Before the bill was introduced Introduced in introduced In- In the Governor took look the recommendations of the Coordinating Council that the state provide the Education Center concept for the Basin Utah State University was appointed to Institute and operate this concept With this recommendation the bill became law IN TilE THE FALL fALI of 1967 the first classes began I under director Delbert C C. C Purnell The second director Paul Edmunds promoted rural development and planning in the Basin and brought many recreational programs to the Center from 1971 to 1974 Under Dr Varnell Bench director of the Center since late 1974 the annual enrollment has more than doubled The cost for each student at the Center however has decreased from a year to about 1500 a year Projected enrollment for 1977 78 shows an even lower cost per student because of the growth in numbers The Education Center provides lower division programs to help students prepare for university campuses campuses cam cam- provided upper division and graduate classes and helps residents of the Basin develop themselves and their resources College credit courses are provided year round and vary to meet the needs of the students An increased number of students are arc taking advantage advantage advantage ad ad- vantage of the variety of classes and workshops now offered The rhe courses are scheduled at convenient times limes and places for students Many are held in the evenings or on weekends in addition to the daytime classes Most are 10 week courses and offered at reasonable prices SCHOLARSHIPS grants and loans are available to the students in the Basin Students at the Center range from 17 to 68 and classes are generally held In the high school facilities of Vernal Roosevelt and Duchesne Several days a week chartered chartered chartered char char- planes plane fly professors from Logan to the Uintah Basin for a full schedule of night classes After the classes each night they are flown back to Logan There are also 15 adjunct adjunct ad ad- faculty members in the Basin LOCAL I HIGH I IGI school libraries are furnished books and reference materials by Utah State University so that the best library facilities are available to students The Center then utilities these libraries that can now provide college texts and resource materials Books films and audiovisual audiovisual audiovisual audio audio- visual equipment can be be borrowed in person or on request from the Merrill Library at in Logan Upon students can receive the materials the next day in inthe inthe inthe the Basin The Roosevelt Center also has hasa a bookstore and student lounge The lounge offers refreshments recreation a place to relax or study Additional advantages for students of the Education Center include lower tuition and fees board and room savings by living at home and smaller classes for more individualized instruction |
