I Godfrey Uintah Unit President American Cancer Society What is isco co cancer The human body is composed of microscopic building blocks called cells Generally cells are organized into tissues which in turn form organs For example the heart organ is composed of nerve muscle and epithelial tissue and contains nerve muscle epithelial and blood cells Cells of the body multiply at different rates according to their functions Nerve and egg cells never multiply whereas red blood cells and sperm cells are produced in great gleat quantities during a lifetime IN NORMAL JAL cell growth the rate of cell div division si n Is controlled controlled controlled con con- trolled cells quickly adapt for different functions and the new cells form useful tissues and organs Normal cell growth can repair damaged tissues by producing n new w cells This type of growth stops when a wound has healed or when no more new cells are needed Sometimes one or more cells of the body stops responding to normal body signals and begins multiplying in an uncontrolled fashion These cells ordinarily do not stop slop multiplying once they start nor do they develop into useful tissues or organs If the cells are enclosed in a covering or capsule which localizes the growth the lump of useless cells is called a a benign benig tumor Examples of benign tumors are warts cysts and moles These tumors are usually harmless AN ABNORMAL JAL growth of useless cells not enclosed in a capsule is a malignant tumor This is cancer which sooner or later spreads to other parts of the body if left untreated Next week Tumor terminology terminology ter ter- This column is intended intended in in- tended to provide information to Express readers Your questions and comments are welcome |
