On the 17th inst. at Bellvue, Alturas Co., Idaho, a republican county convention was held, which might more appropriately have been termed a conference of anti-"Mormon" sore heads. The preamble and resolution were adopted, in which the delegates to the convention who voted for it, have written themselves down as enemies of religious liberty and republican institutions: Whereas. The Mormon people in the Territory of Idaho are rapidly assuming political proportions, and are becoming an element of danger to our civil institutions; and Whereas, said element has heretofore been counted and used by the Democratic party of this Territory as a political lever; therefore, be it Resolved, that the Republicans of Alturas county are opposed to any and all political affiliation or association with such an element, and that this convention recommend to the Territorial Republican Convention to convene at Boise City on the 24th instant, the adoption of an emphatic anti-Mormon platform and policy, denouncing, in accordance with all Republican precedent, the yet surviving twin relic of barbarism polygamy; holding the Republican party of Idaho to its complete extermination, and soliciting the co-operation of all good citizens of whatsoever political creed. |
