Show The San Francisco Chronicle is a newspaper that never fails to improve an opportunity for a venomous fling at the "Mormons." In so doing it usually shows two traits-ignorance of facts, and a disposition to falsify. Here is a recent specimen of its ignorance, mendacity and venom: The election in Utah promises to see some lively work. The Mormons are issuing circulars containing suggestions for evading the law, and propose to have their Bishops join in supervision of the election with the Precinct Registrars. It is about time that these people should be made to feel the heavy hand of the law, immunity from its penalties has made them insolent, and not even the damaging blow they recently received seems to have had any effect upon them. No such circulars as those spoken of exist, or have been issued. Instead of inciting voters to register illegally, the "Mormon" leaders have, in public and private, urged all persons to refrain from any attempt at registering, unless they can legally do so. No "Mormon" bishop that we, the Chronicle, or any one else can name, proposes to meddle with the duties of the registrars. The "Mormons" are not and have not been "insolent." They feel that they have been deeply wronged, and that they are now suffering oppression under unjust, un-American and un-constitutional laws, but their attitude is one of dignified patience, as of a man in durance and disgrace, who knows that a brief period will bring to him liberty, vindication and triumph. |
