Show Plymouth - 1620. The following poem, written by James T Fields, for the celebration of "Forefathers'Day," at Plymouth, Dec 21, 1880, was read by the President - WELCOME thou dark December morn, that breaks across a world of snow. Ye clouds of winter, tempest torn; Ye blasts from icy ? that blow! For with you comes a sacred band of sea-worn wanderers, faint with toil. To plant upon a chosen land God's flower of freedom in the soil. Oh guard that flower thus [sown?] in tears, And hedged about with [?] prayer. So sacred amid such hopes and fears, So watched through danger's night of care. Oh glorious morn; Oh glorious flower! Immortal league of traveling souls! Time ne'er will dim that hallowed hour. While round our shores the free sun rolls. |
