Show The following pertinent queries have been handed in by a respectable citizen who "can't see" exactly why some things are as they are.

EDITOR LEADER: - AS editors are supposed to know everything, I wish to inquire how it is that a thief like the runaway Hughes, can abscond with money as he did, and no effort be made by sheriffs or magistrates to track him and arrest him, untill enough days had passed to give him full opportunity to escape? Or is our county without men empowered to act in such cases?

Again. Why cannot positions of trust be given young men who have grown up among us, and are every way qualified, insured of taking any adventurer that comes along into our confidence?

If you can answer the above queries, you will oblige one who looks on and is sometimes filled with,

WONDER.

We confess ourselves "stumped" for an answer to either question. No cyclopedia at our command throws any light on either. Hughes fooled around Ogden 8 days without an effort being made to catch him, but on the ninth day after his flight from Logan an officer started after him, arrived in Ogden, claimed that he had been seen footing it towards Salt Lake, and - came back home. A dispatch to Ogden would have secured his arrest and we presume he is now in Salt Lake where he could easily be caught. We regret that we cannot better satisfy "Wonder." |
