Show GOVERNOR MURRAY'S INFAMY. The action of Governor Murray in issuing a certificate of election to Campbell as Delegate to Congress from Utah is one of crowning infamy. In the face of the fact that Hon. (Honorable) George Q. Cannon received five times as many votes as did Campbell, the cheek of the latter in contesting the election at all was simply astonishing. This being so, in what estimation shall the action of Governor Murray be held? It was an act of despotic power, perpetrated by a man whose religious prejudices proved strong enough to impel him to violate the most sacred rights of 18,000 American citizens, rob them of their franchise, override the law in a most flagrant manner, and steal a whole Territory! And further it was an act that will doom its perpetrator to ignominy and contempt that shall be as widespread as the knowledge of his infamy. Of course the contest will be carried into the House of Representatives, and we confidently believe that that body will not ratify so infamous an act as that of Governor Murray, by awarding Campbell the seat to which he has no more right than if he had not received a vote. Dispatches from Washington convey the information that both senators and representatives have expressed their detestation of our Governor's act of infamy, and if the contest in the House does not result in the awarding of the seat to Hon. (Honorable) Geo. (George) Q. Cannon, our astonishment will equal our disappointment. |
