Show INTERESTING TO STOCK RAISERS.

At a recent meeting of Zion's Board of Trade, a committee was appointed to take into consideration the advisability of the Board's engaging in the livestock business this fall, for the purpose of forestalling the operations of "middle men" and saving the raisers the profits on their stock. The committee has rendered a report, given below, and we believe the soundness of the conclusions therein expressed will be generally conceded. We deem the advice given in the report to our farmers worthy of cordial endorsement.

TO ZION'S BOARD OF TRADE - Your committee appointed to inquire into the propriety of the Board of Trade engaging in the cattle business, respectfully report that after investigation we do not deem it advisable for the Board to engage in said business before next spring.

We recommend that the people, be advised by their Bishops or those in authority in the settlements to provide for and keep their cattle through the winter. We think that selling in the fall is injurious to the farmer, from the fact that the animal he sells for a yearling in a few month will be a two year old, and with straw, chaff and fodder that the farmer has on hand, it will cost him but little to keep the animal: he gets the manure made during the winter to enrich his land, and will gain several dollars on each head in the difference in the classifying of ages and prices for well kept cattle are higher in the spring than any other time of the year.

We think this business can and should be handled by the Board of Trade and suggest that by appointing a prudent, active and experienced agent, with the assistance of the various co-operative institutions, a great many cattle can be got together early in the spring and sold in a bunch by the agent of the Board, so the farmer will realize the highest possible price. We further recommend that Samuel Holt be appointed by the Board as agent for this business, with whom the people and cattle buyers can confer.

Respectfully, G.L. Farrell, Secy.(Secretary) of committee. |
