Hollenbeck Last Tuesday's election marks the close of the 18th amendment to the federal constitution and also the wiping out of the state con-! con-! stitution prohibition. Utah carried defeat to prohibition by a vigorous majority, in spite of the powerful power-ful effort to still maintain prohibition. prohib-ition. Prohibition has been the greatest foe to good government and good morals that was ever foisted upon the people of the United States and Utah. Many of our misguided friends conscientiously conscien-tiously voted against repeal, but, the fact that repeal is accomplished, accomplish-ed, is and will be a great blessing to our misguided friends as well as to those who worked and voted for repeal. We have had no control con-trol of the liquor traffic, and no taxes from it and the racketeers and kidnappers and other law breakers have been nursed and encouraged en-couraged in their nefarious practices, prac-tices, and people have become drunken and law breakers by prohibition, pro-hibition, and public . sentiment against the law, has aided such results, when it is the real desire of the people and public sentiment to sustain and maintain the laws of the country. We are entering a new era, In government and morals, mor-als, but, the effects of prohibition will not immediately be wiped out, but, from now on the improvement improve-ment will come, and to get the proper kind of legislation to accomplish ac-complish real temperance, will be a matter of cool heads and wise and careful judgement to properly control and handle the liquor traffic. traf-fic. But, controlled and wisely managed it will be, and partly by experimentation, which experimentation experimen-tation was denied by the constitutional consti-tutional laws that we have had. Let us all, now, work for wise and sensible legislation . that we may properly control the liquor traffic, and make it pay a lot of our taxes, and also,. that we may Improve In good morals and good government. The election spells a cleaner and a better America. |
