Show e eL E i L- L ORGANIZATION WINS VINS INS IN HIGHWAY ROUTING The new v Roosevelt highway U. U S. S No 6 G will vill enter Utah from the East via highway 50 we ve are told in in a news vs dispatch from the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah The report r came to them from their hell hellI I president resident Frank Martines of Richfield and the chapman chairman chair chap man of their road committee who vho attended the meeting meet meet- meeting ing in Chicago of the American association of Highway Highway High High- way vay officials who vho made the assignation Several weeks ago a move was vas started b by G. G C. C Kohl president of the Associated Civic Clubs of Eastern Eastern East East- em ern n Utah to have a representation of highway vay 40 at this meeting Duchesne and Roosevelt were vere the only points along the route willing villing b to contribute an any het help P toward vard this representation and the project was vas dropped Not so with the Southern Clubs though They had their representation and they got their road Whether or not representation of highway 40 at the meet would have done any good w we ve e cannot know v. I The old adage not worth vo th fighting for is not worth forth having is is still true however vever and we ve certainly didn't put up much of a fight for highway high 6 G. We didn't get ft it w either What is most disappointing of all to Uintah basin- basin ites is the absolute lack of o f fidelity on the part of President Peterson of the Utah State Road commis commis- I sion At a meeting in Vernal nil last winter vinter he informed us that 40 was vas the most feasible route into Utah from the East that he favored such a routing g for highway high 6 G and that he would use his influence for such a rout rout- ing The triumphant report from Mr Martinez gave much of the credit for the routing decision over 50 I to to- President Peterson This change of heart seems to have followed the threat of Carbon county merchants to boycott Salt Lake City wholesalers wholesaler s unless they changed their then support to favor Carbon county Such uch a threat in in its literal sense was vas foolish and Salt Lake City could have had she so desired counter- counter boycotted ed Carbon county coal and brought them to time in a hurry The real but unwritten un threat seems to have held water vater though though the the old threat of voting power ver so prominent in the minds of our state officials officials officials whenever we ve are nearing election time as at present And so once again we ve take the back seat while we ve look wistfully at t the 1 ie rewards re given to organized af af- fort When Uintah ah Basin merchants and professional profession profession- al men learn that there are problems other than those found insi inside e their r respective doors which are just as worthy of their t time and attention when they learn that the only satisfactory solution to these problems must be arrived at through united effort and when whenn they heartedly whole whole hear y join n in organized movement to meet these problems an and d fight them through when they act on what they have learned Then learned Then and then only will vill the Uintah Basin receive its proper recognition recognition recognition as an important section of the state of Utah ANOTHER TAX ON THE MOTORIST l T Salt Lake City we ve wen notice is planning to install soon a system of park-o park meters When the motorist drives up to the curb to park he must drop a coin in inthe inthe in inthe the meter whether his intended stay is is an hour tool or a afew afew few v minutes While this i is s of little interest to us 1 in n inthe inthe the basin it does show v the constant tendency to soak the motorist While the system is is set up as eso a means of relieving parking congestion in i lri 1 Salt Lakeit Lake it does not seem to us t to o be of much benefit benefi t to this problem which after all is not v very ry bad in in comparison compari 1 son to many cities It looks more lik like e another scheme to impose additional taxes and difficulties on the already already already al al- ready har motorist An Another other good reason i e ason for being glad we ve live in Duchesne |
