Show IA.T.SCHROEDER ON DIVORCE. The current number of The Arena contains an article by Theodore Schroeder, better known among us as A. T. Schroeder, entitled "The impurity impur-ity of Divorce Suppression," which Is an article in favor of divorce for causes other than adultery, which is the only one recognized by the ultra-purists. ultra-purists. After citing tho history ot the most sensitive purists and outlining outlin-ing tho arguments advanced in favor of refusing divorces except on the ground of Infidelity to the marriage contract, Schroeder concludes by saying, say-ing, among other things: "If marriage mar-riage may legitimately include business busi-ness partnership, Intellectual companionship, compan-ionship, or general good fellowship I and mutual helpfulness, why should not a failure to realize these be just as Important as Insuring divorce as sex-disappointment, sex-disappointment, especially when tho rights of children can bo properly protected, pro-tected, or when tho union is childless? Why should tho woman who finds herself her-self married to an habitual drunkard, or abusive brute, have inflicted upon her as a life sentence a choice between subitting to his foul embraces, or living liv-ing In enforced loneliness? Only tho blissful irresponsibility of ignorance, or the cruel paternalism of fanatics could inflict such penalties. If anything any-thing in tho natural sex-relatlon is Impure, Im-pure, surely a compulsory continuance of a loveless marriage must bo the extreme for tho Impurity. To deny persons per-sons tho right of remarrying Is but an indirect attempt at legalizing compulsory compul-sory sex-suppression. Tho consequences, conse-quences, only thoughtless peoplo will fall to foresee." |
