In view of tho telephone ngltatlon now going on in Salt Lake, tho readers of Truth may bo interested in tho light which Now York City is making against tho extortion of the Bell monopoly. mon-opoly. Salt Lake is to bo congratulated on having an up-to-date competing tele-phono tele-phono company, thereby Insuring our people protection against extortionate rates and poor service, which is the rule in all cities whore there is no competition. Tho great daily papers of New York City have taken up tho light In favor of tho people and against the Bell Telephone company. We quote from tho Now York Herald of January Janu-ary 29th: "Suits already brought in tho name of the city to force tho surrender and control of the conduits by the companies com-panies operating them and to recover $5,000,000 due to tho municipality and fraudulently withhold have familiarized familiar-ized tho public in a measure with soino of tho jinderground methods of the Tnlnnhnnn Trust, but there aro manv well guarded secrets not hinted at hitherto which a well directed Investigation Investi-gation backed by state authority could easily expose. "It is not generally known for in- stance, that at tho very time indignant indig-nant New Yorkers aro protesting against exorbitant rates exacted here and the Telephone company Is insisting insist-ing that tho peculiar exigencies of a Now York service renders lower rates Impossible, that same telephone- company com-pany has laid away carefully computed comput-ed schedules of much more reasonable reason-able tolls, by which tho company could still earn a handsome profit and tho. substitution of which would for a time probably quiel, .public clamor, but so long as it boliove3 that public protest, voiced by tho Herald, ls likely like-ly to blow over, it will stand pat. "It would bo easy for such an inquiry in-quiry to learn that revenues derived from tho excessive charges exacted In New York are being utilized to bolster bol-ster up other subsidiary companies of the giant monopoly which have been sorely smitten by competitive enterprises enter-prises in other states. "Thcro aro subsidiary companies in some of tho states which have for .several .sev-eral years been playing second fiddle tr, nnmnntltlvo Independent companies and more than ono of tho Boll concerns con-cerns would today bo bankrupt wore it not for tho strong sustaining arm of the great combination which can well afford to shovel into tho empty coffers in tho west in order to fight competition a goodly portion of the hoard wrung from communities like Now York, where its monopoly remains re-mains intact. Ono or two of tho Bell concerns havo been so sorely pressed that tho parent company has been obliged ob-liged to loan them millions to maintain main-tain tho integrity of tho continental system, and It is Now York which is paying tho cost of nursing theso weak members." I ho niarirago of Miss Annlo M. Anderson An-derson and Frank V. Van Cott took place Wednesday at noon in tho Snlt Lake temple. Tho young people went directly to their home, TIC, Fourth street, where they will shortly bo nt home to their friends. i MM "David Harum" has left tho quiet 'jf l of Homcvillc, up 'York state, and is HI again tempting fnmo and fortuno In HI tho west. This shrewd chap, with his 'HI bald head and fringe of red hair, will HI soon again bid for popularity at tho HI boxofllco of the Salt Lako theatre. iHI |
