Show II AB0LITION OF YELLOW FEVER. Dr T B. Boatty. who has recently ! ,.CCb" In Cuba, relates how the mcdl-I mcdl-I Mi authorities have succeeded in pro-venting pro-venting the spread of yellow fever In the West Indies. The result Is due to w tho martyrdom of Dr. Lazare, who 'ave his life to the cause. The pay-e pay-e firlnn was confident that the mos- n iito or rather one kind of the many 11 mosn'uitoes, was tho means of spread- Inn the infection, so when ono day one nf the striped variety alighted on his hand ho permitted it to pierce him r" mdisturhed. Five days later ho was dead but not before ho had communi-I communi-I cated the intelligence to his brother physicians and described the insect ' H as one of the peculiar sort mentioned. H Four other physicians in various H parts of the island had similar experl- Iences and died for tho sake of humanity. hu-manity. Having satisfied themselves that this particular insect was the means of spreading tho infection, tho physicians phy-sicians began Isolating their yollow fever patients by surrounding them with mosquito bars. As the life of the mosquito is about 150 days, It was thought at tho expiration of that time tho fever would cease. It so happened. While isolated patients died -during tho time, at tho end of that period there was not a case in Cuba and the physicians rejoiced. Once afterward a ship entered tho harbor of Havana with a case on board. It was surrounded with mosquito mos-quito netting and the ship's passengers passen-gers permitted to land as though nothing had happened. The patient died, but there was no spread or the Dr. Bcatty is confident that Cuba will never again bo affected with tho fever. Ho speaks highly of the sanitary sani-tary work done and performed sinco tho Spanish ceased to rule and predicts pre-dicts that In future Cuba and the surrounding sur-rounding dots of land in tho ocean will bo more popular than over at winter resorts. |
