' " 1 Boys JV Baseball team played Wasatch on Thursday, March 17. Pholo courtesy of Chris Hockcr Viking Baseball Season Starts in Region 4 by Kent Allen Well, here we are again. Springtime in the Rockies. Fire and ice. Note: Prepare for the ice, because if you don't, you can't put it on when the ice does come and it will. And when you are in the stands watching baseball base-ball and hearing the announcer give notice of hot dogs and hot cocoa for sale, you realize another an-other true effect of living in the Rockies. St. George and Mesquite also enjoy this time of year because be-cause of all the fans from Utah and Salt Lake counties thai travel trav-el south to support their favorite local team involved in any of the many different tournaments held in "Dixie." Of course, the 70 to 75 degree temps have nothing to do with supporting your team, And all the available tee times have little attraction to the true baseball fan between games. I took advantage of a great afternoon last week and ended up at PG's baseball park and watched the JV team play Ri-verton Ri-verton JV. The Vikings got thumped, (just like the Varsity did when they played at River-ton River-ton a day later). But 1 snooped around the grounds, enjoyed the warmth of the sun, green grass and talked a hit with the coaches. coach-es. Rookie Head Coach Darrin Henry has bought into the old saying. "If you build it, they will come!" The park looks great and the improvements seem to be an ongoing effort. The varsity team will play everyone in Region 4 three limes in a row then move on to the next team, leaving little time to practice between games, ending end-ing the regular season on May 6, 2011. The Vikings already have 4 vvin-1 loss record thus far through the preseason with two more games scheduled before the preseason finishes on March 26. This Spring will mark the last time PG will play Alta, Brighton and Hillcrest High Schools as they will be moving out of the Region. They will be replaced by Lehi, Rivcrton and Bingham High Schools. (And I thought Region 4 was tough this year!) So. if you go, remember all games start at 4 p.m. They will be played on Tuesday, Wednesday Wednes-day and Friday except the PG Jordan games, which will be played on a Tuesday. Thursday Thurs-day and Friday during the last week of April. AND, lire and ice. Take what you need to stay warm, but either way, the concession con-cession stand will have hot dogs and hot cocoa for your enjoyment, enjoy-ment, which is in addition to the fun of watching and supporting Viking Baseball. j |
