Hillcrest did not really seem to be prepared for a tennis match in their uncoordinated attire, un-like PG dressed uniformly in their tennis uniforms and looking truley ready for a tennis competi-tion. In Number 1 singles action, PG's senior Christiaan Noot de-feated Hillcrest's Michael Mann in three sets, and 7-- 5. Number 2 singles found freshman Hayden de Hoyos matched against Hillcrest's Matt Gerberding. Hayden destroyed his opponent in two sets, 6-- 2, 6-- 0. Springtime in the Rockies. Fire and ice. Note: Prepare for the ice, because if you don't, you can't put it on when the ice does come and it will. And when you are in the stands watching base-ball and hearing the announcer give notice of hot dogs and hot cocoa for sale, you realize an-other true effect of living in the Rockies. St. George and Mesquite also enjoy this time of year be-cause of all the fans from Utah and Salt Lake counties thai trav-el south to support their favorite local team involved in any of the many different tournaments held in "Dixie." Of course, the 70 to 75 degree temps have nothing to do with supporting your team, And all the available tee times have little attraction to the true baseball fan between games. I took advantage of a great afternoon last week and ended up at PG's baseball park and watched the JV team play JV. The Vikings got thumped, (just like the Varsity did when they played at River-to- n a day later). But 1 snooped around the grounds, enjoyed the warmth of the sun, green grass and talked a hit with the coach-es. Rookie Head Coach Darrin Henry has bought into the old saying. "If you build it, they will come!" The park looks great and the improvements seem to be an ongoing effort. The varsity team will play everyone in Region 4 three limes in a row then move on to the next team, leaving little time to practice between games, end-ing the regular season on May 6, 2011. The Vikings already have 4 vvin-- 1 loss record thus far through the preseason with two more games scheduled before the preseason finishes on March 26. This Spring will mark the last time PG will play Alta, Brighton and Hillcrest High Schools as they will be moving out of the Region. They will be replaced by Lehi, Rivcrton and Bingham High Schools. (And I thought Region 4 was tough this year!) So. if you go, remember all games start at 4 p.m. They will be played on Tuesday, Wednes-day and Friday except the PG Jordan games, which will be played on a Tuesday. Thurs-day and Friday during the last week of April. AND, lire and ice. Take what you need to stay warm, but either way, the con-cession stand will have hot dogs and hot cocoa for your enjoy-ment, which is in addition to the fun of watching and supporting Viking Baseball. j 577 ; - ' J V ... ,'i r- - 'A --v, O ' ' f t T V .' .j .1 J.- The Vikings men's soccer team traveled to Kearns on Tuesday, March 15, and pulled off the victory defeating Kearns 5 to 0. Pleasant Grove Men's Soccer Team Defeats Kearns 5-- 0 by Dan Williams Behind a hat trick and an assist from senior Winston Sorhaiti and a couple of goals from the Fonseca brothers, the Vikings cruised to a 5-- 0 non-regi-victory over Kearns. Sorhaitz started the scoring early in the first half taking an on the ground cross and drib-bling through a couple of de-fenders to the six yard box and putting the ball into the lower left side of the net. Sophomore Ryan Fonseca scored his sec-ond goal of the season and the team's second of the match by controlling a ball at the 1 8 yard box and volleying it into the goal at mid-heig- inside the right post on his second touch. Sorhaitz added his second goal of the game and the team's third goal still in the first half of play. In the second half, Sorhaitz again made things worse for the Cougars as he dribbled into the box and put a dangerous ball across the six yard box that se-nior Kevin Fonseca slid onto to poke it into the goal. That was also Kevin Fonseca's second goal of the year. Sophomore Aaron Wil-liams stole a pass in the midfield and dribbled to the right side of the field and laid the ball off for Sorhaitz who took a couple of touches and then burned a 25 yard rocket from the right side into the left side netting for the final goal of the game with about 20 minutes left. Sorhaitz is enjoying his senior season with the Vi-kings and upon completion of the school year will join the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League's (PDL) BYU- - Cou-gars soccer team a few games into their season. This club team doesn't play through the NCAA, but through the sum-mer development league, play-ing in the Southwest Division. This is considered the high-est level of amateur soccer in the country including many NCAA stars in the lineups of the different teams. The BYU club could qualify for one of the PDL's nine spots in this year's 98th annual Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Soccer tour-nament and compete against professional teams including Real Salt Lake. Other teams in their league are in Ogden and California. They play a 16 game regular season.
