Show Moab Craftsman to Represent Area in State Competition Joe Albert Garcia of Moab has been selected to represent the Moab Chamber of Commerce and local industries in the Governor's selection of Outstanding Craftsmen in the state. This is the first year that such a program has been awarded, and it is set up to recognize individual indi-vidual performances of craftsmen throughout the state of Utah. An Appreciation Appre-ciation Dinner will be held in Salt Lake City in March to honor five such outstanding persons. per-sons. All nominees will be listed in the honor roll. Mr. Garcia is employed employ-ed at Texasgulf, Inc., as a journeyman in the maintenance department. Joe grew up in Green River, and has spent the balance of his thirty five years in this state. Before Be-fore beginning his employment em-ployment with Texasgulf in 1963, Joe has been a surveyor in Colorado and a construction worker on the Stearns-Rogers crew that built the potash plant in Moab. When Joe started with Texasgulf, he started as Janitor, but didn't remain re-main in that position for long. His ambition and desire to better himself was soon noticed, and he was given the opportunity opportuni-ty to Drove himself as a w . I ; Mr. Garcia Maintenance Trainee. In just over a year, he was promoted to a Grade 3 Maintenance Man, and by 1966 he had risen to Grade Six and has been a Journeyman ever since. Joe's quick rise to the top of his profession has not, however, went to the top of his head. He still has that same good nature na-ture and quick smile no matter how good or bad things are going. Joe obtained his basic education in the Green River School System and has advanced his education educa-tion in Moab since his high school graduation in 1958. He has taken three Bureau of Mines First Aid Classes, two welding classes and is currently studying Appliance Electronics Elec-tronics in the Moab Adult Education Program. He is currently living in Moab with his wife, Helen and their three children; Trent, Travis and Tracy. Joe has been quite active ac-tive in community activities activi-ties since coming to Moab. He has coached one women's softball team, three "Tee" league teams and three Little League Teams. He has also been camptain ofthe Texasgulf bowling team and has participated in softball and basketball as an active player. Joe intends in-tends to continue both his education and his athletic activities in upcoming years. |
