Lyle Hyatt, Division Commander from Price, leading the Highway Patrol trainees in a discussion. km Lawmen Attend Training Session Here A two-day Inservice Police Pol-ice Training School took place in the courtroom of the Grand County Courthouse last week. The sessions were sponsored spon-sored by the Division of Police Officer Training of the Utah Department of Public Pub-lic Safety. Chairman of the training school, Sgt. Ralph Benson of the- three county, district of the Utah Highway Patrol welcomed the troopers troop-ers and officers of the district. dis-trict. There were 17 to 20. officers offi-cers in attendance at the school representing Grand and San Juan counties and East Emery county. Training got underway on Wednesday with Sgt. Glen Coffman giving a presentation presenta-tion on Report Writing. Trooper Troo-per Bruce Black talked on . the subject of Accident In-. vestigation and Measurement Measure-ment Technique ' of Skid Marks, and Sgt Benson discussed dis-cussed Patrol Tactics and problems of patrolling in this area. Division Commander from Price, Lt. Lyle Hyatt, was . present at the training sessions ses-sions and conducted a discussion dis-cussion on Public Relations and News Reporting. Dick' Wilson of the Times staff was invited to talk to the Highway Patrol officers on photography techniques and methods of taking better accident . pictures for evidence evi-dence purposes. The Thursday meetings started with Sgt. Harry Patrick Pat-rick of the Salt Lake City Police Department talking . on . Police Intelligence Capt. Ed M. Pitcher of the Utah Highway Patrol talked to the trainees regarding traffic traf-fic laws of Utah Local County Attorney Harry Har-ry Snow talked on Criminal Law and .Mutual Problems as related to Grand, San Juan and Emery counties. . Friction or drag factors was presented by Capt. Pitcher. Mr. Ivard Rogers of the Utah Bureau . of Criminal Identification spoke to the men Thursday and explained explain-ed the uses of the teletype and the NCIC (National Crime Information Center) ; machines. Rogers brought out the progress that is be- ing made throughout the United States and in Utah regarding rapid communications communi-cations by means of computerised com-puterised equipment. Such equipment, stated Rogers, is enabling Highway Patrol officers of-ficers and all law enforcement enforce-ment agencies to get past and current information rn any suspected vehicle or person. With the use of computerized com-puterized equipment the return re-turn of information to an officer is within seconds. The Division of Police Officer Of-ficer Training is less than a year old, Sgt. Benson stated. stat-ed. The two-day . training session was an example of the schooling all police enforcement en-forcement officers will be receiving as a result of recent re-cent legislation which requires re-quires th'em to have 200 hours. 16 hours of instruction instruc-tion were provided, in last week's police officer training train-ing session. The new incoming incom-ing Grand County Deputy Sheriff . also received Jhis first 16 hours of police training train-ing at no cost to the county. Coffee and donuts were furnished the trainees by Grand County. |
