Show Park Service Report Story is Indicative Of Student Interest What would you think of a coloring book - story book -nature study-art- penmanship penman-ship for an all-in-one lntcr-grated lntcr-grated education project? The following story is an excerpt from just such an educational - environmental awareness exercise devised by, once again, Mrs. Louise Hetzel, of Helen M. Knight Elementary School. After studying the animals and how they live, her second graders "tell" the following stories to each other, where- upon they are edited and placed on the board by Lou, then copied back by the students stu-dents as a story (and penmanship pen-manship exercise) to insert in the coloring book (art exercise) ex-ercise) prepared also by Lou. One such story follows-we follows-we think you will find it dc. lightM. P.S. Don't miss this class' exhibits of animal communities communi-ties now in the Arches National Na-tional Monument Visitor Center. And by the way let's hear what some of you other elementary school teachers tea-chers are doing. LIZ THE HORNED TOAD Once upon a time in a very jlry, hot, sandy area, there lived a Horned Lizard by the name of Liz. She was well liked by all her reptile friends that lived by Turnbow Cabin. She is a well - dressed young lady with many horns all over her body. Liz protects pro-tects herself from her enemies en-emies by either squirting blood from her eyes or by raising her horns. Her home is in the dirt. One bright morning Liz woke up very hungry for some breakfast, so she buried herself in the sand with only her head showing. It was not very long before Andy Ant came along. All of a sudden Andy Ant wasn't there. After a good breakfast break-fast of insects, Liz decided to go for a walk. Lo! and behold she met the Horned Lizard of her love. It was Harry Horned Toad. After a short time Harry and Liz were married. One fine spring morning Harry told all his friends to come and see his family. There in the nest were some eggs which Mr. Sun will help to hatch. Father and Mother Horned Toad were so happy they had a party. |
