Show Pirate News Notes . . . By Royd Hart School is out, so this will be my last article as the reporter for Green River High School. I want to devote most pf my article to recognizing one of the finest athletes to come out of G.R.H.S. and to point out a tremendous injustice on the part or our school and its administration, for failing to give him the recognition he earned and deserved. To make my point clear, how often do you have an athlete that is picked on the all-state first team by the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News, in both basketball and football, and qualify in three events to participate in the state track meet and place in two of these events. How often do you have an athlete that is . the highest scorer in the state for basketball both his junior and senior years and averages around 20 rebounds a game. How many football players average 18 tackles a game? His accomplishments for athletics ath-letics have been tremendous. In years past, athletes who have achieved in sports have been given a special assembly to honor them. They have been awarded many trophies. This young man received this year one small trophy (The All Around). Two traditional school sports trophies and one new trophy were not given this year and he certainly would have been in line for all three of these. I ask, why were these suddenly eliminated? This young athlete received far more trophies and recognition from sports writers up state than he received from his own school. The sad part of this story is young athletes just coming into High School realize that traditional trophies that they want to work for can suddenly be withdrawn at will. This can severely damage a young athletes determination to achieve. I know the students of G.R.H.S. will back me 100 when I say that we are proud of Tim Vetere and for the regognition he brought to G.R.H.S. We are proud of all our athletes and we want to show it by giving them all the recognition they work for and deserve. Stacy King (the receiver of the best all-around girl athlete) ath-lete) traveled up state last week, to participate in a Pentathalon. The competition was very stiff as Stacy competed against 1A thru 4A schools. She did an outstanding outstand-ing job in representing G.R.H.S. by taking an overall third. She was surpassed only by two girls from 4A schools. The events participated in were long jump, high jump, 60 yd. hurdles, 220 yd. dash and the shot put. Stacy is only a Sophomore so she will be able to help our school out further in the next two years. The Graduation Ceremony for 29 students was held on the 26th of May. The ceremony was very different from past graduations, with slides of the seniors from childhood to present times. The ceremony was enjoyed by all and I'm sure will be remembered for a long time. |
