Show Red Devil Gridders Point to Opener With precious little time to prepare Moab football prospects pros-pects are being hustled through two-a-day drills in anticipation of the early opening 1976 football season. Coach Glen Richeson has his charges working out at 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. trying to put things together for an opening league game with Hurricane August 20. Hurricane is a member of ' the league this year so there is no such luxury as a practice game to iron out wrinkles. About fifty gridders are currently vying for positions with an even division of upper and lower classmen. Coaches split the squad into varsity and junior varsity in order to get more time with the squadmen who appear to be varsity prospects. More ninth and tenth grade players are expected expec-ted later as they have considerable more time to prepare. On the plus side the Devils have eleven lettermen return ing and all are out. Some large holes have yet to be filled however as such losses as Merrill Noyes, Ken Bohn and Mark Roberts were all all-staters. all-staters. All-state Mike Zimmerman Zim-merman is back at an end as is the other flanker Nick Chavez. Iley Copeland, Russell Peck, Trent Garcia, Randy Stewart and Leonard Horton all had starting roles on the line last year. Also returning from the state runnerup team of last year are backs Jay Johnson and Don Flynn. Backup men Jeff Meador and Jerry Stocks will bolster the backfield. There will be some new faces looking to fill the large shoes of Noyes at fullback, but it's too early to tell who will fill the bill. Hurricane will be Moab's longest trip in a year that will see the Devils chalk up an incredible number of miles in the vast Region Seven lineup. Who will be making those trips is the question coaches have two weeks to answer. |
