Show fa . r- . . , :, ; . " ' n STOCK CARS They look like the family sedan, more or less, but run wide tires, beefed up suspensions, roll bars and souped up engines that can crank out more than 400 horsepower. Lining up for a race here are six of the top cars and drivers at the Delta County Racing Association Speedway at Delta, Colorado, host to $2,500 purse UCAR-sanctloned races on Saturday, Aug. 14. Several stock car racers from the Moab area are expected to compete. Moab Racers to Compete in Delta Several Moab-based stock car drivers are expected to hit the race circuit this weekend, traveling to Delta, Colo., for races Aug. 14 carrying a $2,500 guaranteed minimum purse. The race will be the third of the season sanctioned by the Utah-Colorado Auto Racing Association. Moab will host the last UCAR race of the season Sept. 4 at the Red Rocks Raceway, and an awards dinner for UCAR drivers that weekend. Among the top Grand County drivers expected to participate in the grueling, 60 and 100-lap races in Colorado are John Kimble, Neal Swisher, Swish-er, Gene Swisher, J. W. Wiggins and James Nyland. The big UCAR races will be held at the Delta County Racing Association track alongside U.S. Highway 50 about five miles north of Delta and 35 miles southeast of Grand Junction, Colo. The track will open to both spectators and racers for hot-lapping and tuning at 5:30 p.m. Time trials are at 6:30 p.m. and the first race is at 8 p.m. At least 50 of the fastest stock cars in Utah and Colorado are expected for the Aug. 14 races at Delta. They are coming from Moab, Price, Green River and possibly Ogden and Salt Lake city, Utah; from Aztec and Farm-ington, Farm-ington, N.M.; and throughout Colorado, including Denver, Pueblo and Steamboat Springs as well as from the Delta and Grand Junction tracks. The Saturday night races carry the largest guaranteed purse ever offered in Eastern Utah or Western Colorado, and promises some of the fastest, wildest dirt oval racing anywhere. Competing stackers typcially crank out around 400 horsepower, have extensively modified suspensions and drivers capable of running the laps in 18 seconds. With those ingredients, it promises to be one of the most keenly competitive races ever staged in either of the two states participating. Stretching Stretch-ing the normal 20-lap main event to 100 laps will provide a grueling test of car and drivers' stamina as well as speed and racing skill. It will be the rare stocker that survives without a blown engine, or at least a few dents and dings. Like the Red Rocks track and racing associatin, UCAR is a new organization. It is a joint venture of the Red Rocks track and racing association; the Price, Utah, track and drivers; Cactus Park Speedway at Grand Junction; and the DCRA organization at Delta. All are non-profit corporations dedicated to improved auto racing in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. UCAR was conceived to provide more challenging competition com-petition for drivers and spectators specta-tors alike, and larger purses than any one track could handle alone. UCAR-sanction-ed races will be held this year only at the original four tracks. Drivers run on a point system, with trophies and end-of-year payouts due, the top drivers. Awards will be made following the UCAR race in Moab Sept. 4. Assitance in securing lodging lodg-ing and other services for racers and stock car fans is available through the Delta Chamber of Commerce or the racing association, fcarly room reservations are suggested, although there will be no limit on seating for the UCAR-sanc-tioned races on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the DCRA Speedway north of Delta.
