Show Volunteers Completed Solarium Training Program A number of adult and teen volunteers took part in a training program in the solarium at Allen Memorial Hospital Sept. 16 preparing them to work with long-term patients as volunteers. The program was sponsored by the Utah State Division of Health and prepared for Cost Improvement Project Hospitals which accept long-term care patients. The major objective of the project is to provide therapeutic recreational activities for these patients in the small hospital setting. Activities presented are designed to meet patient needs either in a group or individually, and to provide physical, intellectual, social, spiritual and emotional emo-tional stimulation in much the same way that everyday life in the community provides such challenges. Programming is designed to use the strengths and abilities the patient has to prevent further deterioration, depression or withdrawal, and to offer the stimulation and activity needed to maintain a quality of life for the patients at their optimal level of functioning. Volunteers were introduced to a variety of ideas for recreation, some including available groups and persons in the community as resources and participants in activities. Some possible activities discussed included children's hour, popcorn, scones or ice cream parties, story hour, current events discussions, musical activities, word and action games, and crafts. Anyone interested in volunteering regular time or talent for a special recreation project at the" hospital is asked to call Binks Martin, 259-5231, or Lil McCormick, 259-5389. |
