Show Juvenile Cases Decrease in 1969 In Eastern Utah District 1,421' cusps' were filed in 1969 with llhe Fifth District Juvenile Court covering the fotinilies of Cnn-boni, Daggett, J)fU( tiesne, fimory, Crand) San Juan amd1 Uintah. This compares com-pares wilh 1,563 cases in 1968 and 1,540 caws in 1967. This decrease reflects .a change in llhe law made in 1968 which authorized City Counts in Utuli lo Jim ndle juvenile traffic violators. vio-lators. The number of traffic cases referred to Uhis Juvenile Juven-ile Court drojiped from (538 in 1968 to 480 in 1969, which more than accounts for the decrease in total cases. Significant changes did occur oc-cur in the kinds oif cases referred: re-ferred: In 1969. 800 cases involved in-volved delinquency, a decrease de-crease of only four cases from the previous year. Of these, 474 were for criminal law violations,, down from 1552 in 196,8, and 326 were for ibehavior delinquency such as running away, out of control and truancy, an increase from 252 in 1968 for this type of can. 1969 tints continued the pattern of the past few years with another JncreaHO in non-icriminail type delinquency delin-quency cases. A change in the law Ln 1965 authorized justice of the peace and' city courts to handle contributing cases, but no statistics are available on the number of such cases filed' in other courts. Illegal possession or consumption con-sumption of intoxicants was the 'most frequently referred offease wtlth 111 cases. The number of ca.ses 'involving running away from hme and out of control behavior be-havior increased from 230 in .1968 to 3M in 1969. Some of the more important dispositions taken by the Court included 21 cases wherein where-in the ytung person involved involv-ed was committed to the State Industrial School and 63 cases where some otlw-r commitment commit-ment or change in custody ordered was- involved. Thicj compares with only 9 State Industrial School commitments commit-ments in 18. Probation was ordered in 104 cases. Work orders were assigned requiring requir-ing the young person to complete com-plete a work assignment for. a pubflic agency in lieu of a fine in 170 cases and fines of varying amounts were imposed im-posed in 344 cases. Total fines collected for the entire district An 1969 amounted to $7,676.00. In Grand County 244 cases were nsferrcd. in 19 compared com-pared to 308 in 1963 for a decrease de-crease of 34 per cent. Almost all of tli is decrease is accounted ac-counted for by traffic cases which dropped from 132 in 1968 to 40 in 1969. 200 delinquency de-linquency cases constituted orily a slight decrease from 205 the previous year. Principle delinquency offenses of-fenses referred . in Grand County with 1963 figures in parenthesis were auto theft .15 (13), other theft 21 (23).. illegal entry 6 (1), illegal use or possession of intoxicants 121 (30) and drug offenses 6 (3). No vandalism cases were referred in 1969 but there were 13 such cases in 1915. Total cases by county for all counties in the district were Carbon 459. Emery 114, Daggett 12. Duchesne 132, Grand 244, San Juan 153 and Uintah 302. |
