Show Green River School Honors 7926-27 Basketball Team In conjunction with the bicentennial commemeration, and with a bit of nostalgia, the Green River School honored members of the 1926-27 Region 5 basketball champions at a pre-game reception and special ceremony during the evening of March 5. Present were Orville Swan-son, Swan-son, Ken Silliman, Harold Anderson, Bill McClurg, Lewis Lew-is Green and John Peak. Team members who were unable to be present included Raymond Thurman, Frank Chiodo, and team manager Philip Dufford. Green River School principal at the time, Orval Christiansen, Christian-sen, now of Las Vegas, was on hand for the event, as were cheerleaders Ruth Robison Nielson and Zelpha McPher-son McPher-son McCIurd. Mrs. Marion Bickmore, wife of the coach, was also present. Representing Represent-ing Babe Tasker was Dan Tasker. Following the pre-game reception team members, wives, faculty and administration administra-tion were special guests of the school at the final homegame of the season. During this time the guests were given special recognition before the game and at half-time. The honorees came from Denver, Price, Salt Lake City, East Carbon City and Las Vegas. In the State of Utah in 1926-27 Green River was in the fifth region, which was divided into Class A, B and C divisions. In Division A were Uintah Basin schools; in Division B were Green River, Moab, Monticello and Bland-ing; Bland-ing; and in Division C were Carbon, Huntington, Castle Dale and Ferron. These teams played in their division during regular season play, then met at one central location for a Round Robin Tournament to determine which teams went to the State Tournament. All of the schools within the state were in one classification, classifica-tion, and the small schools played the large schools, regardless of size or distance. Standings as of Feb. 17, 1927 were: Section A, Central Hi, Castle Dale, 6-0; Carbon, 3-2; Ferron, 33; Cleaveland, 2- 3; Section B, Green River, 3- 0; Moab, 2-1; Monticello, 0-3. When Green River played at Moab that season, Green River won 25-21, and when they played Monticello at Green River, Green River again won 26-24. |
