Show Skills Day Makes For im Scout Competition -. Saturday is traditionally . Out-of-Doors day during Girl Scout Week and this week on Sat. March 13 we'll see Girl Scouts from Red Rocks Neigh-borhood Neigh-borhood on the Junior High field competing with Troops from Carbon Neighborhood in the First District VII Skills ; Day. We will have troops here from Helper, Price, East & Carbon, Bluff and hopefully from Monticello. The open end troop from Bluff will be traveling to Moab on Friday evening and "camping in" the Scout House. Utah Girl Scout Council President Nancy Jane Bales and husband Howard and First Vice President Betty Rider and husband Wayne will be traveling from Salt Lake City to observe festivities and we hope join in the fun. In 1973 Leaders felt not enough girls were learning the various camp skills and decided decid-ed a day of games and competition would be a more . learning experience than just working on such things during troop meetings, and a good way to celebrate out-of-doors day during Girl Scout week in March. 1974 was our first such venture which we hope to hold every year. Even years will be for the girls and odd years for Leaders to hold their own skills day. Too many people forget or are unaware that Leaders must know how to do all these things before they can be taught to the girls. During the 1974 Skills Day we had 131 in attendance and with Carbon Neighborhood coming we hope to have a field full of girls. The public is invited, Flag Ceremony Cere-mony will start off the day at 10 a.m. and we hope to be done by 4 p.m. The big contest of the day this year will be an event by Senior Girl Scouts who have challenged the Boy Scouts to a lashing contest and chariot race which is scheduled for 2 p.m. The girls are pretty confident they can do a good job but they better remember last Skills Day Boy Scout Leader Jim Walker was helping the girls learn all about knots and this year I imagine he'll be giving his expert knowledge to the boys. Other skills to be displayed will be First Aid, Compass games, Fire building, Wood sawing and Knots. Come join in our fun. |
