Show Employe the Older Worker, Mayor McDougald Reports Moab Mayor W. D. McDougald Mc-Dougald has officially proclaimed pro-claimed the week of March 8-12, 1976 as National Employ the Older Worker Week in Moab. In the proclamation he states, "I am urging all employers of this area to give special consideration to the skills and qualifications of those men and women 40 years of age and older." Studies indicated there are 74 million Americans in this age group, and that 39.8 million of them are working and represent 43 percent of the total labor force. It has been shown that workers hired after the age of 40 tend to attain a higher performance rating within a shorter period of time than those hired before the age of 30. In addition, the number of days lost per 100 workdays for all reasons decreases as age increases, and workers in the 45-64 age group are only half as likely to change jobs as persons in the 25-44 year old group. Mayor McDougald's proclamation pro-clamation points out that the older workers "have worked hard to get where they are today, and get us as a ' community and nation where we are. During their years of work they have learned a great 1 deal, gained invaluable exper-' exper-' ience and have come to : appreciate a good job and to be proud of doing a good job." He also states, "Many of these people, though, are having difficulty finding work for no other reason than that there is a prejudice against older workers." While urging local employers employ-ers to consider older workers, he also called for "public officials who are responsible for job placement, counseling, training and retraining services ser-vices to intensify, throughout the entire year, their efforts to help older workers find suitable suit-able jobs and training opportunities. |
