Show Epilepsy Assn. chapter formed in Moab Pat Beaver, an epileptic since age three, nan announced the formation of a Moab Chapter of the National Epilepsy Association. Asso-ciation. She stuted that she wants to dispell misconceptions mis-conceptions held by many people regarding epilepsy. She pointed out that epilepsy is not a disease, but a symptom, and that education is necessary to allow epileptics epilep-tics to participate to the fullest extent in the community. She said that she would like to provide information for epileptics, parents, teachers and community members. She went on to say that 50-80 percent of all epilepsy is controllable by medication, but that many people still perpetrate myths concerning the condition. Ms. Beaver pointed out that, in the past, "epileptics "epilep-tics have been shunned or put away." However, with new understanding provided pro-vided by medical science, information is now avail- S able through the Association Associa-tion which explains the true nature of epilepsy and its social ramifications. ramifica-tions. Ms. Beaver emphasized that donations will be necessary to help the Moab Chapter get off the ground. Donutions can be sent to the Moab Epilepsy Association, P.O. Box 1056, Moab. Persons interested in assisting in the formation of the Chapter are asked to contact Pat Beaver at 259-8318. Ms. Beaver said that she would welcome assistance from area epileptics epi-leptics who are interested in distributing educational information. Preliminary plans are being made to conduct a workshop in Moab after the first of the year. A fund-raising bake sale is planned for Nov. 18. |
